We had the good fortune of connecting with Laurie J. Gardiner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laurie J., we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Leonard C. Green pointed out in Entrepreneur that, “Entrepreneurs are not risk-takers. They are calculated risk takers. The difference between risk-takers and calculated risk-takers is the difference between failure and success.” In other words, calculated risk-takers might not play a game of roulette, because the odds are against them, yet they might be open to playing blackjack because it’s possible in that game to tip the odds in your favor through strategic play. Taking calculated risks throughout my career has been one of the key factors that has helped me find success over the years. In order for me to navigate through life confidently with my Plan A, I also make a Plan B, Plan C, and even store a Plan D up my sleeve just in case things go awry. However, I am a firm believer that taking risks without a plan is just as detrimental as having a plan and thinking everything will go exactly the way you planned it. Thus, I try to keep myself flexible and have fun while creating a life I love.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My new company, Laurelwood Studios! What sets my company apart from other great companies is my deep love for music. It’s easy to overlook the importance of music in films by focusing on other elements of the filmmaking process, but at Laurelwood, our goal is to enhance your cinematic experience by using our signature style to create carefully constructed, spellbinding music to capture the untapped parts of your hearts for years to come. Through my company, I am excited to build a legacy based on a quiet belief in limitlessness, create stories that tackle issues within marginalized communities to create dialogue and action towards positive change, and explore the power of musically driven dramas through the medium of short and long-form content. The journey of an artist/entrepreneur will NEVER be easy! But I am able to push forward with vigor because I understand that my journey is not about me. I am cognizant of the fact that every time I do what I was created to do, the end result will eventually help someone else unlock the power lying dormant within them. In the end, that makes every obstacle and sleepless night worth it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So, we’re in a whole pandemic, so I would tell them to throw on their cute little masks and head to Jacks N Joe in Downtown LA. I’m drooling right now thinking about their Brook’s Blues pancakes. Haha. I love, love, LOVE to eat, so nourishing peoples bellies is always first on my list. From there, I would encourage them to go to Santa Monica or Malibu beach to watch one of LA’s breathtaking sunsets. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
They say it takes a village to go far in the entertainment industry, and I have been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by individuals who have supported me and added great value to my life over the years. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but I am especially appreciative for the confidence the following individuals have showed in me and greatly value the insights and guidance they have provided. This shoutout is dedicated to my mother, Janet Parker; my sister, Jeanelle Reid; my friends and family in HTX; the phenomenal faculty and staff at USC; my first three mentors at USC who have now passed on, Larry Carroll, Jed Dannenbaum, and Judy Irola; the incomparable Dr. Julie Moore-Foster; Clementine Leger; Brandon Sonnier; Tom Wentworth; Theo Brown; Lisa Fox; First Jobs; Christine Acham; Angelique Molina; and Diane Galardi. … I told you it takes a village. Haha. I love you all!
