We had the good fortune of connecting with Lawrence Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lawrence, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I was creative at a very early age, I began artistically drawing at 6 years old. Nothing really inspired me then at that time, until later on in life. I remember entering a drawing contest in our class, and when the day came, the kids who entered presented their artwork, one by one. One showed a house, with grass, a swing set, kids playing. The next one drew rainbows, and clouds, and mountains. The next were birds, flying over the beach, with sand castles, and the ocean. When I was next to present, I held up a werewolf, with long fangs, an extra long mane, devilish eyes, long claws, and drool coming out of his mouth, even down to the tiniest details of hair and veins in his arm and legs, haha. The kids in my class were flabbergasted as well as my teacher, rightfully so. The kids laughed, and I was really hurt, but I loved it. That day I knew I was different from everyone else, and I knew I wanted to go and pursue anything creative. However, little did I know, my artwork led me to music.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Many beautiful things about art is that, you can express yourself in so many ways. Whether its with a paint brush, writing words and transforming them into poetry, harmonizing and turning that draft into the perfect song. It starts with how you view the world from your pain or happiness and expressing that in any way possible.
I’m so excited to share so much music. I have 5 albums ready to go personally, and then The Kool Whips debut album due out next year. My double album “The City” which will be entirely mixed and mastered in Dolby Atmos Spacial Audio, dropping in 2025. Lastly, I have a self published book releasing next year entitled “Ready. Set. Bloom: A Book of Short Stories, Poems, and Other Lovely Shit”. I’m really excited for everyone to hear and read my upcoming works.
I’ve gotten to the point today professionally by one simple thing. Never giving up. That’s it. That’s the secret. If I told my younger self what struggles, pain, heartache, the joy in between, I would go through on this musical journey, my younger self would’ve given up, and chose another safer career. There were many times I thought about quitting to be quite honest. I would talk to myself and really analyze it. Is it really for me? Do people like my music? Am I even talented enough? Those kinds of things. I really got into my head thinking about it, and second guessing myself. I overcame those challenges by making more music. I would share music I’ve made to my brothers, and closest friends, only a handful. They really gassed me up, as friends should, I knew my music was ok, and it had potential, but my circle really pushed me to keep going. I’d like to personally thank Mr. J. Medeiros of (The Procussions). He was an artist/rapper I grew up listening to. I loved his album, “Of God’s and Girls”. It really resonated with me, from the lyrics to production. Every song was top tier. I knew I wanted to work with him one day, and I did. Through mutual friends, shout out to Deux Process, he linked us both and eventually got to collab. That got the ball rolling, locally and internationally.
The most important thing I’ve learned throughout this journey was to experiment, and be myself and to not make music that people want to hear, I make music because it’s something I’ve never heard of before. It’s all your emotions, your feelings that you want to express to the world. I always told myself wether its 1 or 100 people that can take something away from it, I was happy.
I want everyone to know that there will come a time when you will hit rock bottom on your pursuit of “happyness”. It’s not a road to take, but small detours, that take you where you never want to go, but you have to, and it’s the only way to get to your destination. Life will throw everything at you, and even all at once, but if you truly believe this is meant for you, eventually the universe tends to unfold as it should.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I knew my best friends were in town, I’d take them first and foremost to In-N-Out. I mean its pretty much a tradition to all newcomers visiting LA. Then I’d take them to the Getty Museum and Griffith Observatory. Those are my favorite spots in the city. It’s a beautiful view, and artwork to admire all in few hours. From there I’d take them to a Lakers or Dodgers game. OBVIOUSLY. Take a trip and drive around Venice Beach, because it’s just dope. Introduce them to some pretty cool famous artists/musicians and friends of mine, while we’re out and about. Lastly, I’d take them to sit in on a music session and just vibe out. That would be a perfect day in my opinion. I hardly ever go to any clubs, but lounges would be an exception. I strongly feel they would agree too.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many inspiring people that led me to where I am, but I’d like to first start off by thanking God, and my parents, Yolanda and Martin Munday and my sisters, Anna and Annette. They gave me so much support when I truly needed it the most. Secondly, I’d like to thank my brothers, Albert, Delvin, and Nour. They were the ones who truly made me believe in my music other than myself. I would always have them listen to my music before anyone else. I felt and knew their approval was crucial and important to my success, and it was. Words can never express how grateful I am to have their support, and in my life. To all my friends who have shared, bought, and took the time to listen to my music. I believe time is so precious, and not many people are blessed to have that luxury, and for that, I’ve never taken that for granted. My bandmates, The Kool Whips, for giving this Hip Hop/R&B Producer a chance to jam out and make some incredible rock and electronic music I would only dream of. Lastly, I’d like to thank myself for never giving up when I was at my lowest. I love that for me.
