We had the good fortune of connecting with Lee Nicholas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lee, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always knew that I wanted to work for myself for creative reasons but Nicholas for The People gave me a voice that I felt I hadn’t had before. I started a business that was rooted in equality, sustainability, community and environmental justice so that I could advocate for the things I believe in. NFTP gives me a platform to talk about things I think matter, a reason to get involved, a sense of freedom and a source of income to give back to organizations that are doing the work I am aligned with. I didn’t start this business for myself, I started it for the people.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been working in the fashion industry for over a decade now, and while that may not be as long as others, I feel very proud and confident about the work I’ve done for others, and the work I am starting for myself. One of my biggest inspirations in life is travel, and nature, I always have my camera strapped to my side so I can capture the inspiring moments that happen everyday. I love finding natural patterns and compositions in everyday life and turning them into digital prints to incorporate in to my designs. I think I have a natural eye for design and an organic drive to do my best work, I strive to be original in everything I do. I think that is a key to success, to do what inspires you and to work hard to find your own voice in whatever it is you do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, living in Palm Springs, it’s all about that leisurely, resort lifestyle.. so I would most definitely incorporate LOTS of pool time and cocktails, but the desert has so many magical things to offer. A trip to the high desert is in order for the shopping in Yucca Valley and the drive to Pioneer town, where there are a couple great restaurants. There are some really fun and historic places to visit in palm springs, such as Billy Reeds, which has a hall of pies and a beautiful bar for enjoying a martini while listening to live music or one of my new favs, Bar Cecil which is part of an up and coming new scene here in the desert. Palm Springs has plenty of local businesses to support where it’s drinking, shopping, or eating. I love the hike at Indian Canyon, a walk through Moortens Botanical Garden, or a drive around town to see the historic homes located in town.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My dad absolutely inspired my brand and my signature style is credited to him, the Dad Tank. My whole life he has worn these oversized tank tops, and for a while he was asking me to make some for him, when I realized that I had created a style that he and I both loved I knew I had to take it a step further. The Dad Tank is comfortable, breathable, easily styled and can be used to layer or as a great basic, as always it’s made from natural fabrics and designed to be size and gender inclusive.
