We had the good fortune of connecting with Leen Alramlawi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leen, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking a risk is never an easy decision, especially when you are an immigrant woman of color. Taking a risk is really following your intuition in pursuing an idea that has no guarantees of the outcome, it is working towards the unexpected. Putting in work and time not knowing what the results would be. Taking risks has played a huge role in my life, from starting my own company fresh off college to following my passion in advocating for menstrual equity and starting an initiative in partnership with two advocates and flying overseas to launch campaigns to help tackle period poverty.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being an Immigrant who identify as woman coming from a developing country that lacks human rights and more specifically women’s rights I knew what and who exactly I need to advocate for. I started working for an organization as a Marketing Coordinator raising awareness on the challenges new comers and especially women new comers might face, and providing exposure to their new environment through job opportunities, childcare and more. During this job I came across the issue of period poverty. The more I learnt about it the more I became so emotionally attached and passionate about. I started volunteering for an organization as a communication director, quickly after I got promoted as Vice President launching campaigns to Increase awareness of the organization and promote its programs and goals among women, managing partnerships, running International initiatives and lobbying the government on all three levels municipal, provincial and federal. Due to the pandemic the organization has decided to close its doors, however my passion has never stopped so I afterwards have decided to initiate a project, RAD (raising awareness, advocate , distribute) that aims at tackling period poverty internationally starting with Jordan and now Mexico in partnership with Christina and Atifa. We have launched our Campaign on February 8th 2021 and successfully distributed 1,070 packs of pads, 152 diaper bags, and 50 senior diaper bags to 520 women, 152 children, 34 senior diapers and 15 disabled women at Gaza refugee Camp in Jerash, Jordan and Jordanian Women’s Union in Amman, Jordan. Our mission is to empower menstruators through menstrual policy consulting, education, entrepreneurship, and research. Along with RAD, I proudly serve as a vice president at the Women Empowerment Network dedicated to ensuring that women impacted by adversity, become empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

The main lesson I have learned is when we come together we can eliminate social injustices. I want the world to know that the impossible is possible in partnership and empowering one another,

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
