We had the good fortune of connecting with Leon Wu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leon, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
At Sharpe, design is a social service. Sharpe’s designers, which we call Design Ambassadors are spread across 5 different locations across the US – California, Texas, Illinois, North Carolina and Florida. In 2021, we will add more Design Ambassadors to the Sharpe group in Colorado, Georgia and Massachusetts who will be available to help clients create custom clothing for their special occasions. These designers not only help our clients curate and produce their custom looks, but more importantly they are trained to be confidence coaches who understand battling dysphoria and how to bring out the best style based on an individual’s identity. At Sharpe, we believe fashion is identity. It’s simply not enough to suit you up in high-quality dresswear. We want to elevate how a client feels wearing Sharpe on their special day, whether it’s a virtual wedding or graduation or a future red carpet event once quarantine is over. All Design Ambassadors are LGBTQIA-identified people who are inspired and serve to empower others in our community and beyond.

Another notable distinction about our fashion business, and specifically queer fashion in general, is the contrast between queer fashion models versus models in mainstream fashion. Moreover than exuding charisma, queer fashion models come in all shapes and sizes, ethnicities and gender identities. To become a successful queer fashion model for any LGBTQ fashion brand, it is much more than just physical looks and style. It is about WHO YOU ARE and what you do as a public figure to incite positive change within the LGBTQ and POC communities. We love how many inquiries we continue to get every year from people who are interested in becoming models. We encourage all body types, ethnicities and LGBTQ identities to model on what we call your runway.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Sharpe is a Public Benefit Company. Through media campaigns, the goal of our visual activism is to have a positive effect on, create opportunities for, and to support the LGBTQ community, women, and people of color through charitable channels. In early 2021, we will be releasing a very special music video series featuring singers from these communities. The campaign will showcase a modern vibe and inventive nod to some of our 80s music favorites selected by each vocal artist. The project has been extremely cathartic for all the singers and crew who have been working together on these pieces virtually since the start of quarantine. The purpose of the campaign is to bring professional and artistic visibility to these talented singers as well as to inspire and entertain Sharpe followers, clients and a wider audience of entertainment content viewers.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of the best things about LA is the lovely weather and outdoor dining year-round. I’d recommend any restaurant on the beach or off the water, especially at sunset. Or take a drive down Pacific Coast Highway all the way from Malibu to Redondo Beach, with the top down or windows open, and then end your day cracking fresh crabs at Pacific Fish House and some cold Korean beer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout goes to the hardworking Sharpe group. Every day, every week, and every month they do a fantastic job to keep this business growing while providing great service to our clients!
