We had the good fortune of connecting with Leonard Samuels and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leonard, is there something you believe many others might not?
Hello Shoutout LA,
I am excited to begin this interview! I do not believe that I have something in particular, I was raised to work harder than most people, my passion and dedication to the craft is what drives me every day and I don’t do it for the money. Hopefully that answers your question.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Yes, my journey began in New York, I moved to the East Coast to start my master’s at Pratt. I thought I needed a master’s to become successful. However, that was not my journey. I quickly realized that work experience was more important than a master’s degree at that point. So, I made it my goal to get a job at a movie poster agency. Not easy! But that’s where I learned that you have to keep moving forward even when people tell you no. I knocked on a lot of doors but I finally found one open. And so, I share this story because talent is important, but resilience is more important in my opinion. With my resiliency to keep moving forward even if doors are not open, I will climb through the window if I have to.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Great question! These days I don’t have a lot of time; I am really focused on my company goals. But if I had to pick, I really enjoy going to the Hollywood Bowl with my wife and friends. Definitely one of the best venues in LA! I also enjoy your occasional opera, it’s always important to support the arts. At the end of the night or evening having some drinks and food at the many LA restaurants. One of my favorites is Damian, as an Afro-Latino it is nice to find a restaurant that knows what Mexican food is, not your basic tacos.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My company is named after my dear grandpa. He was the best grandfather/father I could have possibly wished for. In his honor after passing away I began, Zayde Creative. He always believed in my goals and aspirations. My grandparents in general were my compass and I will forever be grateful. Of course, I have my mother and wife to thank, but Zayde Creative is a company where we believe in and champion each other. That’s what my grandfather “Zayde” would have wanted me to do. Help others and continue to grow and never be afraid to take the path least traveled.
