We had the good fortune of connecting with Levi Lane (Viligir) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Levi, how do you think about risk?
I think about risk often, both in my personal life and in my business life. Risk is essential to working towards your goals and being better than you were yesterday. If you don’t take it, you will never leave the ground. But if you take too much, you will crash right back where you started. For me, I like to take opportunities that push me a little bit beyond what I’ve done before. It is important to not jump to far from home base but also maintain a steady push towards bigger goals that require more risk. I see people in my industry spending thousands of dollars on that “perfect” music video or piece of gear when in the end, it won’t help their brand in the short term. Don’t be afraid of patience and slowly building your career/business rather than jumping all at once and falling.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Contrast is key. It is my favorite nuance to what I do, and it will always be a part of what I’m creating. I chose early on to tell stories with my music. I want to tell stories of darkness and light, fantasy and cyberpunk worlds, dungeons and forests in the Fae Wild. I want people listening at home, in the movies I score, or on the dance floor to be swept away and experience the world I make for them. I hope that this distinction in my music is evident and sets me apart.

The music I’m making currently is heavily influenced by storytelling and healthy disassociation from the daily grind of the modern world. The shows I throw with World Tree and the music I release with my duo project with forsetî (Fae Wild) are evidence of this. We incorporate live painting, cosplay, multiple genres of dance music, immersive decor and local brand sponsors to provide a space separate from the modern world to get lost in the music and atmosphere. I am so proud to help create a space in the dance music scene that focuses on the community as well as the party.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Yes! Let’s go on an adventure! You’ll find me at the Grand Central Market in downtown for some food, brews and maybe a local farmers market. Then we’ll head over to The Getty Museum or The Griffith Observatory for inspiration. Then begins the Hollywood bar crawl. Good Times at Davey Wayne’s and Harvard and Stone are great music spots. Scum and Villainy is a fun spot for us nerds. Then if we’re still going, we can frolic over to a show or nightclub and eventually (to give the full LA experience) an afters of course.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s easy to want to go it alone and try to take all the credit for our accomplishments. But for me, I really enjoy exploring the collaborative knowledge in my industry. Sharing with others as they share with you is the only way to insure long term success. I couldn’t have made it where I am today without the help and support from so many people that I cannot thank enough. We need close friends, like my childhood friend Taylor, to have our back when things seem monotonous and we need new perspective. We need family to push and guide us in are early years towards a goal that is special to us. We need collaboration with other humans who do what we do to build each other up.

Recently I moved from Seattle to Los Angeles, and I could not have expected the warm welcome and partnership I’ve experienced from so many lovely people that I’ve met here. My shoutout goes to them.
