We had the good fortune of connecting with Levina Lasmana and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Levina, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks and getting out of my comfort zone has been the greatest decision I made as it expanded my point of view of the world. When I decided to leave my home country of Indonesia to further my studies in Japan and the United States, I did feel anxious, but more than anything I was thrilled and excited as I was looking forward to a new adventure.

Those adventures have exposed me to the beauty of the different cultures and opened my way of thinking. Despite the differences in culture and language barrier, I came to realize the power of visual design as a tool of communication; which led me to discover my passion of wanting to further explore the extent of visual communication as a universal language.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a graphic designer, I see my responsibility to provide solutions that help others communicate in the most efficient way. In order to create emotional connection with the audience, my design process involves experiencing things first-hand. Which is why I continuously try to get out of my comfort zone and expose myself to different environments and activities as much as possible. I find inspiration outside of the digital media by going on spontaneous trips from time to time.

All of my experience adds up and it helps me create works of art that connects to people from various backgrounds. I find the joy and satisfaction when I get to mix the different culture to help bridge the idea across. For example, in Fleeting Dreams, a books I designed for a school project, I fused Cinderella’s story as a way to help western readers relate more to the geisha’s way of life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I enjoy going to musical theaters, so I would bring my friends to go and watch a show at Hollywood Pantages. Then we would go on a taco run adventure for dinner and end the meal with churros as a dessert from Churros Don Abel. I would then take them on a night drive to Angeles Crest Highway to look at the beautiful cityscape of LA.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my best friend Veilinda Rusli. We came to get to know each other as we started on our creative journey in ArtCenter College of Design. I really want to give my thanks to her for always encouraging me when I was on the verge of giving up.

Also wanted to give a shoutout to my family, friends and instructor for always believing in me even when I doubted myself.
