We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Voight and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lex, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by humorous juxtaposition. Humans are constantly doing things which seem to defy all reason or sense, and often this can be in innocent or innocuous ways. Most times its a fault of our perceptions–what we assume about others, or what we have been taught. And its all crap. Humans….the world…its all so gloriously and confoundingly complex and the only thing to do about it is to smile quietly or even laugh a little and share our common humanity in the absurdity of little things. We’re all self-contradictory hypocrites in our own ways, aliens in our own worlds. Maybe showing that even a little bit, or giving people a glimpse into other people’s worlds, can do something towards a larger sense of community and empathy.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a photographer/artist working in the entertainment industry. Honestly at the moment, the last accomplishment that I was really proud of was getting one of my photographs on a t-shirt of one of my favorite bands. It’s been a dream of mine since i first started getting in to punk, hardcore, and metal and felt like being a part of something larger than myself–part of the history of the music that really has shaped and saved me.
Success in general has not been easy. Its a moving goalpost internally, so often I take for granted that I am making my living and sustaining myself through photography. I may not always be exactly where I want to be, but its important to take a step back and take inventory of the things that HAVE happened and the things you ARE proud of. Wether its a photograph on a t-shirt or one in a museum or a billboard…whatever it is, try to find ways to remind yourself that you are on your way and you are learning constantly.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If we were going somewhere, I wouldnt go somewhere I have already been. Lets go somewhere new. Somewhere that feels different. I have been more strange places and had better times not knowing how the hell i got there or how little i belong there than any place that is familiar. I would just go. I have a list of places i want to go that is never ending.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Too many to list. Too many that I dont even know. I wouldnt be here without my friends or without music (generally the screamy kind).
