We had the good fortune of connecting with Lila Castellanos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lila, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Beauty is being comfortable and confident in your own skin.” ~ Iman I love this quote because it touches on the idea that beauty is more than skin deep. I truly believe that when we look good on the outside, it helps us feel good on the inside. And vice versa, our inner peace, happiness, and confidence radiates from within. I’ve personally experienced the transformation that healthy skin can have on confidence, and that journey led me to my chosen profession as a Licensed Esthetician. I want every one of my clients to appreciate that the face we show to the world isn’t just an outer shell or mask we wear. It’s a reflection of who we are, and everyone of us is uniquely beautiful.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been a Licensed Esthetician for over 16 years, working in medical esthetics, a mobile spa, and luxury day spas, before opening my own business, Doll Face Skincare Studio, 6 years ago. I’ll always be grateful for the varied experiences of working in multiple environments as it definitely helped me shape my vision for my own venture, but I would have to say that interacting with my clients and paying attention to their needs is what taught me the most. If you’re in a service business, you need to cater to what your clients want and need. I’m also a huge proponent of ongoing education and staying in touch with the changes and advancements in your industry. There’s always more to learn, and it will help you stay motivated. It can also help with new service or product offerings. I also firmly believe that you need to trust your instincts, and listen to your gut!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a native Californian, I think we have so much to offer to anyone visiting the state. I grew up on the Central Coast so I can’t say enough about the beauty of the San Luis Obispo/Paso Robles area. There are plenty of wineries to enjoy, and you can take a stroll through SLO’s downtown area with 1772 Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa and their gardens. And you have to check out The Madonna Inn. Kitsch at it’s finest! I work and live in Atwater Village which is on the Eastside of Los Angeles, and I love it. Doll Face Skincare Studio is located on Glendale Boulevard which is home to loads of independent businesses and brimming with creative entrepreneurs. I encourage everyone to come out and shop local to support small business. On Sundays there is a fabulous Farmers Market in Atwater Village, I love to get fresh fruit & veggies at! Lastly, I’m a Disneyland Annual pass holder, so I would definitely take anyone visiting so they can enjoy the park as much as I do!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My aunt Nancy deserves loads of credit and recognition in my story. Back in the early 1980’s, she entered Cosmetology school, but then shifted her interest to the clinical end of skin care. So while getting her cosmetologist license so also started esthetician school as her goal was to help women and teens with skin issues feel good and look beautiful. Years later she would come to my aid, as I was a young insecure teen suffering with skin issues that included cystic acne and rosacea. It was her passion and dedication that inspired me to follow down that very same path. I attended the Christine Valmy School of Esthetics in New York, the same school my aunt had attended. I am truly grateful to her for giving me the passion and love for esthetics. Thank you Nancy Mangan! I also would like to give a shoutout to my partner Jeff Watkins who has been a great support to me & my business.. he knows the beauty/grooming industry well with being a barber in the same neighborhood, just down the street. It’s been nice to bounce ideas off one another for support.
