We had the good fortune of connecting with Lillian Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lillian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to create a space where black women could meet other like-minded women and have a safe haven to build connections.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the Co-Creator of Brown Skin Brunchin, a social brunch collective that has groups in 18 cities across the U.S that meets mostly for brunch. Through these meetings, women gain both social and professional connections. What sets Brown Skin Brunchin apart from other groups is that there is no pressure to fit a certain mold to join us for brunch. Whether you’re new to the city and looking for a tribe of women to connect with or you just want to find a new brunch buddy, Brown Skin Brunchin has something for everyone.

I am very excited about how fast we grew. We ended up in 13 cities within the first year. Our company had a personal goal to hit 50 cities but when the pandemic hit we had to delay our plans. Fortunately, as we begin to meet again in certain cities and in smaller groups, there is still a lot of support from the public with us. When we began to list cities we were resuming brunches, the RSVP’S filled up the same day.

I am pretty excited about finally reaching 50 cities and opening a few cities internationally over the next year.

It was not easy deciding to start the brunch group as I was pretty skeptical if it would be successful. However I knew I had a vision for the group so I knew if I could just start it, in time it would be a success. The hardest part was at the beginning getting the groups’ name out there and listing our brunches on different platforms and paying for all of the fees associated out of pocket. However, I knew the pay out would be worth it and the temporary sacrifice was worth it.

The biggest lessons I have learned is to trust the process. You will not see results immediately but if you stay consistent the results will come. I have also learned that building a team is key for success. As much as I try, I can not do everything by myself so having a handful of people that I can delegate tasks to and are also creatively thinking of ways to expand has been a huge asset to Brown Skin Brunchin.

I want the world to know that Brown Skin Brunchin is about more than brunch and that I am working into expanding it into several different business avenues that will be developed within the next 12-18 months. In addition to brunches, we will host trips, events, conferences and so much more.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love L.A. It is a goal to move here in the future. If I were meeting up with a friend we would definitely go to The Malibu Wine Safari. it is so beautiful and I love wine tasting. If I wanted food with a view I would definitely do Brunch at the rooftop of Perch or Mama Shelter. Another LA black owned restaurant that I have discovered is Grilled Fraiche. They have the most delicious Garlic noodles I have ever tasted. I would grab lunch from them and head to Griffith park and have a picnic at the old zoo.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could not have started this group without the Co-founder and my best friend Melissa Mason. She lives on the East coast so she is able to organize some of the groups on the East Coast and has been a big reason why we have expanded as far as we have.
