We had the good fortune of connecting with Linda Smutz and Marcus Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Linda and Marcus, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
We’ve always believed risk is imperative to success. Failure is imperative to success. Taking chances on projects (or anything!) you feel passionate about and following your gut is the most important step toward realizing a dream.
In terms of A Cut Above, we really decided almost over night to start the business. We had the idea for a couple of years, but it never felt like the right time until last year. When we knew, we knew. Of course, we were nervous in the beginning and had absolutely no knowledge of how to start a business at all, but we were confident in our skills.
Honestly, the true key to success is confidence in yourself and whatever you’re offering to the world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are a mobile pet spa servicing the Westside, Malibu, Agoura Hills, and the West Valley. We have a combined 20 years experience and are life long animal lovers and we feel our business is unique simply because of that fact. We’ve built our lives and careers entirely around the love of animals and their people. We pride ourselves on ensuring that our fur clients don’t just look their best, but also feel comfortable and safe during their experience with us. We are committed not only to using the finest products that benefit the health of the pets we work with, but also are safe for the environment.
A year into our business we’ve really come so far. We’ve gone from renting a grooming van a few days a week to owning our own state of the art Sprinter, working full time, and being booked out a month. It’s humbling. The gratitude we feel for our friends, family, and clients for supporting us is impossible to put into words. We are so lucky.
Our biggest takeaway is that everything happens for a reason. When you feel frustrated or stuck in life it’s so important to notice and act on that feeling rather than push it away. That nagging pit in your stomach is begging you to take action and make a change, but even the space between is valuable and necessary to follow your dreams.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oooo where to begin? We live in the Valley and really love it, but there are so many amazing things to do and see.
Breakfast at “The Butcher’s Daughter” in Venice.
Obviously walk around the Venice Canals.
Lake Balboa- pedal a swan around for an hour.
Lunch at Coral Tree
Go home and get ready to go out on the town.
Perch for dinner
The Edison for drinks and fun!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We want to dedicate this shoutout to our friends, family, and clients who supported s on this journey. We also want to give credit to our mentors and teachers who taught us everything we know!
