We had the good fortune of connecting with Linda Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Linda, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
One of the habits I created for myself is to set a routine! When starting your own business, most of the beginning work is about research and planning. No one is setting deadlines for you, so you have to create that yourself. It’s crucial to establish that for yourself to stay on track. The other habit is to work hard and don’t give up easily. Hard work doesn’t come with rewards right away, but you will eventually reap the rewards if you keep at it.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Karuna was launched as the first sheet mask brand in the US in 2009. Before starting Karuna, I was a fashion buyer for companies like Guess, American Eagle, Bebe, etc.

I was inspired to start Karuna because of a childhood experience. I suffered from eczema as a little girl, but luckily, I had a great doctor, who prescribed me an ointment and instructed me to wrap my skin with saran wrap. Within days, the rash was gone. This stayed with me well into adulthood. Fast forward to 2008, while traveling to Asia, I discovered sheet masks. I had an immediate A-HA MOMENT as the application reminded me of my doctor’s order. In 2017, I launched my second brand, Avatara, selling moderate-priced masks, and we’ve successfully launched in Target stores.

Karuna has been around since 2009, marking our 11th year this year. The journey has not easy. I’ve encountered a lot of obstacles along the way, like many entrepreneurs. It all comes down to believe in yourself. If you make a mistake, learn from it to make the right decision the next time. If you are down, pick yourself right back up. The most important thing is to keep moving forward. One lesson I’ve learned along the way don’t let worries keep you up at night. Like everything in life, bad time shall pass. Everything eventually will work out at the end if you keep at it!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Terranea in Rancho Palos Verde! It’s a hidden oasis filled with beautiful hiking trails and scenic views. Then I would drive my best friend up the coast to dine at Malibu Farm in Malibu. The restaurant is set on the Malibu boardwalk with a breathtaking ocean view.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Gosh, this is incredibly hard since I’ve met SO many great people along the way. I would not be where I’m at today without people helping me. If I have to give a shoutout to one person, it will have to be Jeff Holland. Jeff is a beauty executive who took me under his wings back in 2009 and taught me everything there is to know about beauty. Before starting my own skincare company, I was in a different industry and didn’t know this industry. He guided and mentored me in the early years to have an excellent foundation for building my brand. Eleven years later, he is still a part of the company’s next phase of growth.
