Meet Lindsey Tamayo | Background Artist / Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Tamayo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Having grown up in an Asian-American household, I have had the privilege of being immersed in a diverse range of cultures and media. Throughout my childhood and into my adult years, my interest in anime-style content has remained strong. Childhood shows such as Sailor Moon, Avatar, and Spice and Wolf, have greatly influenced my personal style and creative abilities. As anime has become more popular in recent years, I am looking forward to introducing or contributing this style to an audience.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a 2D designer for animation, with a focus on creating backgrounds, props, and paint. What sets me apart is my distinctive line-based style and the personal journey that has shaped my career. Although my roles have been entry-level, I have made a few contributions to the animation industry.
My path has not been without challenges. During my final year of college, I faced severe anxiety disorder. These struggles interfered with my daily life, as there was no warning or detectable trigger before daily panic attacks. As a result, my art output stopped. It wasn’t until 5 months later that I overcame this obstacle, which gave me a new sense of strength. Anxiety, albeit challenging, ultimately ended up contributing to my personal development.
This experience has taught me valuable lessons about setbacks in life. I have come to understand that everyone progresses at their own pace, and setbacks are a natural part of the journey. Embracing this has also helped me come to terms with imposter syndrome regarding art.
Despite the setbacks, I am proud of the numerous opportunities I have had. In fact, the setbacks I faced has made me more appreciative and proud of the positive experiences.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I enjoy exploring Los Angeles. Among the cultural and natural attractions here, the Getty Center Art Museum is always worth visiting. The museum has a cool architectural design, and it’s also the ideal setting for a memorable outing or date. Furthermore, I find LA beaches and coastal trails relaxing.
When it comes to dining, 71 Above is a unique experience. Personally, I have had the opportunity to visit the restaurant on special occasions such as anniversaries. The nighttime views of Los Angeles add a lovely atmosphere to the restaurant. I definitely recommend it!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to share my appreciation to my partner of 6 years, who has constantly provided support and encouragement throughout my ups and downs.
