We had the good fortune of connecting with Lingou Li and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lingou, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
For creatives, starting any new project is like taking a chance, especially with projects meant to make money. Will people like and welcome this project once it’s out? Can my work help the client make more money? Even though we can test things a bit before, we won’t really know until the project is actually shown to everyone.
Taking risks is a big deal in my career because I always aim to be bold and creative. I believe being daring is what makes my work unique and stand out.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a graphic designer based in LA, holding a BFA from CAFA in Beijing, China, and an MFA from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. Currently, I’m designing a brand identity for an automotive startup, a journey that’s been both challenging and exciting. My projects at ArtCenter have received recognition from prestigious awards like Communication Arts, an achievement I’m deeply proud of as a recent graduate! But when you’re out working for real, the greatest challenge lies in effectively selling your creative ideas and exceptional work to your audience, ensuring they are relevant and resonant within their context.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite places are definitely the Getty Center and Getty Villa. Both spots are home to incredible art, ranging from ancient masterpieces to modern works. The architecture of the buildings is artistic in its own right. Plus, the natural scenery is stunning that even if you’re not an art expert, you can still enjoy the views. I love heading there with friends and spending the whole day soaking up the breeze and sunshine
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to Paula Scher. She’s a renowned female graphic designer who was also featured in the documentary “Abstract.” She is one of the main inspirations behind my decision to pursue a career in graphic design. As a female designer in the industry, she has always been my role model.
