We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Angelique and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Doux Candles began as a project when the pandemic lockdown occured last year. Much like many others, to fill time during the stay at home order, I found myself cooking and doing home DIY projects. It was then that I realized that I had always wanted to make candles mainly for the reason that they consistently burn throughout my house. With the passion for traveling, it was simple formulating the fragrances featured in this collection, fragrances that represent some of the most beloved cities I’ve traveled to. This DIY project turned into a focus on making high quality handmade reusable products with the emphasis of highlighting some of the most beautiful places in the world.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Doux Candles-which means “sweet” in French- is not only home decor that represents amazing places in the world with fragrance notes, but also strives t0 focus on sustainability and eco-friendliness. For instance, all vessels are reusable, fragrance oils are non toxic and soy wax is not damaging to the environment. When someone requests a business card, I’ll advise that I only use QR codes instead of paper products as a form of advertisement. Rather than wasting paper products, I’ll use QR codes to access social media and other digital platforms. This is an important aspect of the sustainability ideology behind Doux Candles.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles and one thing that I love to do is hike! Some of the most spectacular views of the city are from the tops of many trails. My favorite hikes are the iconic Hollywood sign hike–which is pretty much vertical– and Los Liones with spectacular views of the ocean. Hiking is not only a great form of exercise, but to me, it’s also so therapeutic! I’m also a foodie and cocktail fanatic. I’d definitely would have show off my city by featuring outstanding craft cocktails. One of my favorite spots, Harvard and Stone, has my favorite cocktail of all time–honeydew collins (gin, st. germain, honeydew, lime and coconut milk) *chef’s kiss*.
Right on the cusp of LA/OC county in Seal Beach is another favorite of mine-320 Main. This spot is amazing and their cocktail and food menu is exceptional! They’re known for their fried brussel sprouts with balsamic reduction and Old Fashioned- voted best in OC by OC Register. Make sure to sit at the Chef’s table to converse with Chef Ryan on Friday night for Prime Rib! A must!
