Meet Lisa Gopman | Comic, Writer, Actor, Teacher, and Small Theater Co-Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Gopman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from Cincinnati Ohio but I moved to LA when I was 18 to attend USC. My dad, Arnie, who was eccentric, hilarious, and extremely supportive encouraged me in a tremendous way. Thanks to him, I had the courage to come to LA, and to embrace the lifelong comedy of being a Gopman.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am so grateful to have started Oh My Ribs! 11 years ago with my husband. It has been very important to us to make the theater a place of encouragement and inspiration where everyone is welcome. Especially misfits. We love people that are a little outside the box and looking for a place for their art. Unfortunately at the moment, we are fighting to hold onto our theater space. Our building is for sale and in danger of being torn down, but we are determined to fight to keep our magical theater.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love LA so much, it really does feel like my home. If I had a bestie visiting I would definitely take them to the Hollywood Bowl. I spend many summer nights with friends, cheese, wine, and the gorgeous venue that is the Bowl. We would of course spend time at Oh My Ribs!, likely for a Friday Frenzy Standup Show. And if my friend was visiting for a while, I’d drive up to Solvang/Los Olivos. I love it there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many have helped me along the way-but special shoutouts to my dad, Arnie, my husband Matt, Paul Backer, my family, framily, and the Springers/Yenkins.
