We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa klein and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I had my first son 18 years ago, I wanted to try to balance being a mom and helping others. The best way for me to manage both was to start my own business. It is still challenging at times; however, I have found that being able to create my own schedule allows me to be present for my sons while also continuing to do what I love, helping children find their voices.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
From the start, I knew I wanted to help people, to change lives. I didn’t know what that looked like until college, when I took my first speech course with an incredible professor. That was the day I decided speech therapy was what I wanted to do. I have worked in rehab hospitals, schools, and private practices with all ages.
My practice in Los Angeles has been open for 5 years. We go above and beyond not only in how we represent the clinic but also in our coursework, specialized certifications, and constant learning—educating ourselves on how we can be the best out there. We have advanced training in Childhood Apraxia of Speech, certified orofacial myologist, and are one of the few speech clinics certified in the JASPER program (a program through UCLA).
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Now that I have been in LA for 12 years, I understand why people avoid leaving the area due to the 405 traffic, so we stay on this side of town. We start the day with a walk toward the beach or a workout class—usually Hot 8 Yoga or Coreology. We might stop on the way home for Dogtown Coffee. Next is brunch or lunch somewhere in Venice or Santa Monica, with a little shopping in between. Happy hour at Fig, R&D Kitchen, or Arts Table— the world is open there. Dinner at Giorgio Baldi, where the pasta is out of this world. I am simple; I like to walk as much as I can and be in bed very early.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So many people to thank: my family for all the support and encouragement, the LKS team in Los Angeles and Denver—I could not do any of this without them. Diane Bahr and Dave Hammer for being amazing friends and mentors, always there to answer questions.
To my CAS girls (Michele, Stacey, Denise, Mindy, and Karem)—I don’t know what I would do without all of you.
