We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Zaslove and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liz, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After working in corporate for multiple years, I found that I was very restricted in how I was able to serve my clients. I was limited to what I was able to do or not do. And when I was able to help my clients, I was expected to charge them by the hour. This ultimately made me unaffordable which led to clients not consulting with me. Once I realized that the only way to best serve my clients would be to start my own firm, I did it! I didn’t anticipate that my firm would grow this quickly, but it has! I think that there are a lot of people out there who are unhappy with their accountant, but they don’t know how to leave or find a new one.

What should our readers know about your business?
Zaslove Accounting is a virtual bookkeeping and tax firm. I wanted to create a business that didn’t depend on me working from one location. Most businesses are online now, so why shouldn’t I match that? Gone are the days when you go drop off a stack of papers at your tax accountant’s office. Who has time for that anyway?

Zaslove Accounting is not like most accounting firms. Everything is developed and created with the business owner in mind. My clients have much better things to do than bookkeeping. It’s a waste of their time! They need to know their numbers to make wise business choices, but that doesn’t mean that they should sit at their desk for 5 hours every month trying to figure out how their business is doing. Creating done-for-you services allows my clients to have freedom while still being financially responsible. Business finances don’t have to be stressful, and my goal with Zaslove Accounting is to take the stress out of money!

Starting a business is terrifying. You are putting all of your eggs into one basket, and hoping that someone believes enough in you. Talk about being vulnerable! The greatest challenge in my business was getting the courage to believe in myself and not being afraid of failure. Fortunately, I have the best clients who are always thinking of me and telling people about my business. My business has grown much quicker than I thought it would.

Zaslove Accounting is not a normal accounting firm because I am not a normal accountant. I am not some old man that is set in his old-fashioned ways. I actually understand that my clients didn’t go to school for accounting like I did, so I am always working towards helping my clients understand what is going on in their business. I strive to be constantly learning and adapting to my clients’ needs. We are also always trying to make our clients’ lives easier and less stressful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, I am a big foodie, so I would probably plan most of the trip around food! I would probably take them to Lily’s in Malibu for a breakfast burrito. It is hands down the BEST breakfast burrito that I have ever had. It is a small shop, but they are always packed. There truly isn’t anything like eating Lily’s at the beach. I would also take them to Italia Deli in Agoura for a sub sandwich. Depending on their love for spicy foods, I would also take them to Cuckoo Rooster for a SPICY chicken sandwich. I enjoy spicy foods, and I think that even the mild is hot! If not there, another amazing place to check out is Basta in Agoura. Delicious Italian food that is authentic.
