We had the good fortune of connecting with Liza Gee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liza, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always loved photography, and done it as a hobby since I was a little kid. When I was in high school people started asking me to do paid shoots for them and I would just when I was asked to. I went to college and studied music education, and then after completing my degree decided I didn’t actually want to teach music. I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, and also support my husband in his career goals. So the thought process was essentially “We have to make more money if we are going to survive and give our kids the life we want to, but it’s also important to us to have a parent at home at least for the next few years. So what could I do to accomplish both of those?” I started trying to get more photoshoots, and then a real business was born!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a wedding and family photographer whose primary goal is creating images that make people feel something. What a magical capability that we have to capture life and the stories of relationships during every season of life! I love connecting with my clients and making a new friend in every new client. I love when I send a client their final images and they say “Wow, I can’t believe how perfectly you captured our personalities and love.”

I feel that I am still very much in the thick of growing my business and learning and trying new things every day. I have gotten where I am today through consistency, the help of mentors, and really just putting myself out there. I think starting a business is a very vulnerable thing to do, especially if you are an artist and you are putting out your art. It’s hard to feel vulnerable every time you send someone their photos, or every time you post on social media. You never know for sure how your work will be received. So it takes a lot of bravery. I didn’t start to see real growth in my business until I showed real consistency. Practicing my craft every day, sharing my work, getting feedback, and really trying everyday to practice and learn new things. I’ve learned that consistency is actually what you need to be succesful at anything. If you want to get stronger, you have to work those muscles regularly. If you want to improve your relationships, you have to work at them every day. We want to do one big project or make one big change, but it’s consistently doing little projects and making little changes that really pays off in the end with anything.

I guess I want people to know that I am a very simple and average person, and that if I can start a profitable business and help support my family, then they can too!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Perhaps the most important part of Utah Valley culture is soda shops. We would try every different soda shop to determine who had the best combinations and best cookies. We would see a musical at Hale Center Theater, eat the best Indian food of your life at Bombay house and do some thrifting. If it was summer we would do some hiking in Provo canyon, and visit the farmer’s market. If it was winter we would do some skiing at Sundance. We’d have dinner at Block, and ice cream at Rockwell. We’d spend more time in the canyon, go to a BYU choir concert, just walk around downtown Provo.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Salmon, is my greatest support. He helps me with multiple aspects of my business, and gives me the daily encouragement I need to keep improving!
