We had the good fortune of connecting with Lizz Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lizz, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite quote is “look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or stow away in barns, and yet God feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” This thought really helped me through this pandemic. As a DJ, and someone who works for themselves and primarily in person, this season brought a lot of uncertainty and second guessing of my life choices to pursue something that can be so easily taken away. But this quote helped me realize that I should have faith that I will be provided for and that God sees me and I should keep pursuing my aspirations and find a way to pivot during these crazy times. It really encouraged me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Wow, where to even begin with this… my current journey started when I was 14 and trying to find what would set me apart for colleges. I wasn’t the best student and I knew I needed a skill or something else to help me get into a good school. Fast forward to July 4th Of that year, our annual family outing to the park to see fireworks and eat funnel cakes had me on such a high that I started imitating the way my mother sang. She had an operatic way of singing and I tried to enthusiastically imitate that. That day began my journey as an opera singer. I went on to attend a prestigious music conservatory where I met my late music partner Louis Conway whom I made music with under the name “Ni Oko” and during our years together we self taught how to DJ and went on to DJ nightclubs in LA, and major events such as Anime Expo, E3, and Blizzcon. The lessons I’ve learned along the way are to really cherish the moments. I am so grateful to have had a friend and music partner like Louis and the biggest challenge I’ve had was when he passed away a few years ago and took all of our dreams and comfort of knowing he will always there with him. I am still battling my own self to find who I am without him as an artist and musician… but I believe taking some time to know yourself and to take care of yourself through hard times is extremely important as well and we are not just our productivity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being a native Angeleno, I have so many places that I cherish. My favorite place in the city is actually a bit on the outskirts of Los Angeles, in the South Bay. I absolutely love the Redondo Beach pier and spent many Christmases at the arcade with my family growing up. I also love “The Kettle” In Manhattan Beach, it’s a 24 hour diner that has the most amazing Freshly baked honey bran muffins and a cozy cabin type theme!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my Shoutout to Jesus, my partner Cameron, my late music partner Louis Conway, and all the people in my life that encourage me along the way to keep pushing on.
