Meet Lizzy Roman | Dog mom and founder of Owa Owa

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lizzy Roman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lizzy, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m obsessed with my dogs- they’re my kids! which are the biggest inspiration for starting Owa Owa. to give them the best life possible, I became a certified canine nutritionist. That’s when my treat business was born! Owa Owa’s treats are all meat based, just like nature intended, and come in adorable, nostalgic packaging inspired by my Mexican roots.
My goal is simple yet profound: captivate pet parents with visually appealing packaging while prioritizing nutritional excellence for their fur babies. It’s all about combining passion, culture and nutrition to make a real difference for our furry companions.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets Owa Owa apart is my commitment to species-appropriate nutrition, with nostalgic, Mexican heritage inspired designs, and personally hand crafted recipes. I’m most proud of how much i have grown since starting, and to see pet parents rave about our treats! hearing their fur babies love them too fills my heart.
Professionally, I’ve had so many jobs in the past from being a make up artist to being an industrial engineer, my educational background having an associates degree in economics and a bachelor’s of science in business management laid the the groundwork.
My journey has definitely not been easy. diagnosed with a rare kidney disease as a child, i underwent a transplant thanks to my brother’s generosity when i was only 22 years old, but unfortunately, it failed after 10 years. i endured six years of dialysis, even graduating with my bachelor’s degree while on treatment. also loosing my sister to cancer right before i started Owa Owa.
I’m extremely resilient, like a true Mexicana, we have to be. i overcome challenges with a strong mindset, positive outlook and the mantra: “this is temporary; better days ahead” and of course having an amazing support system which is my family. i love them so much
the lessons I’ve learned along the way are:
-stay true to your passion and vision
-don’t give up on your dreams
-continuous learning is crucial
-support systems matter
I want the world to know that Owa Owa and my story is one of passion, purpose and resilience. every treat reflects dedication to canine wellness and a piece of my culture.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My little itinerary would be something like this:
breakfast at my favorate spot which is Mykes cafe in the city of pacoima, im obsessed with their red velvet pancakes.
explore some local pop up markets because you meet so many creative people, and you find unique products you woul not find at big box stores. probably grab as snack there too. then have dinner at my favorite street taco stand (Ta-carbon) on van nuys blvd and woodman. i would alos take them to my other favorite eats like din tai fung, and if they’re from another state that doesnt have in n out, definitely yes. we would also go to tourt locations like the LA county museum of art, griffith observatory, see the hollywood sign, etc. we would also go bike riding at the beach, it’s so relaxing and of course take my fur babies with us

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
special thanks to my rockstar family: mom and dad for unwavering support, mom for crafting adorable doggie ponchos and bandanas, nieces for pop-up assistance, and fiancé for tolerating my endless business ideas! grateful for feed real institute’s canine certification course.
