We had the good fortune of connecting with Long Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Long, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Currently, I am a freelance Graphic Designer. In my job, it is not easy to catch up with learning new design skills and levels, like someone who knows how to use quick design. I need time to learn more new lessons in my journey because it is not that I cannot do everything the same as a perfect artist. Only I’m happy that someone or a client loves my artwork.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently, I am a freelance Graphic Designer and LGBT+ Vietnamese Deaf. In high school, I realized that I had many challenges with my life and career in the real world. I wondered how to find the right way to get any chances in the future because of the Deaf situation in Vietnam. In the past, Vietnam didn’t provide any opportunities to me and people with disabilities. Also, there were not many Vietnam Deaf who got degrees in education or were honored to show us, so that made me feel nothing to reach my goals for my future. However, the Deaf could work as laborers or depend on the family’s business. I worked as a part-time architect in the company my family took me to join because they tried to do their best to support me. There were all hearing employees and only me in the company. This situation, I felt, was not right for me because I found my goals via the information about International Deaf who can work anywhere. After my decision, I went to the US to study my major, and the university has provided an American Sign Language Interpreter and the Art Deaf professors. I have been happy to get lots of chances and have options, and I graduated my major in 2022.

In my job, it is not easy to catch up with learning new design skills and levels, like someone who knows how to use quick design, for example, the updated Adobe and other ways to quick design. Additionally, I still haven’t been ready to begin my own business because of a few conflicted situations in my plans, so I need time to learn more new lessons in my journey. However, I’m glad to have worked in this role and gained experience, including working and cooperating with the department, organization, and artists.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Traveling, manga, and art museums are my favorites. I mostly invite my art friends and best friends to the art museum wherever they are interested. Also, the wine & art event I love because it helps me feel comfortable when hanging out with friends.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I greatly thank the AisanSigners group and Mill Neck Family of Organizations because they gave me opportunities to gain experience and cooperate with others. Also, I thank an incredible friend, Zione Hong, for cooperating to work together and have opinions. Thur, improving myself and my growth working that makes me feel confident and get chances.
