We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorena Cortez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lorena, why did you pursue a creative career?
I come from a long lineage of artists in my family and ever since I can remember, creativity has been a driving force in my life.

I feel lucky to say that my parents have supported and encouraged my artistic endeavors. Because of them, I was able to attend CSU Northridge and receive my Bachelor’s in Apparel Design and Production. This gave me the foundation of knowledge to launch my small business, Ruby Rae Clothing, where I custom make clothing for women of all sizes.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work has always been inspired by visions of the past. I appreciate the craftsmanship that was used in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Items back then were intricate, made to last, and glamorous. These characteristics are what my products are infused with.

Being an artist comes naturally to me. Once I decided to commodify my work though, it wasn’t always a straightforward path. I launched my small business in 2015 while I was still in college. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but through trial and error I have been able to grow and build a client base who trust me with their visions. I consider myself an eternal student because there is always something to learn and new trends to jump on which keeps things interesting.

The way I overcame challenges and my advice to anyone who is just starting is to START. Don’t wait until you feel fully ready because you will learn so much as you go anyway. Get your hands dirty and jump in, you’ll be surprised how easily things start coming together when you do.

My brand is special because every single item is handmade to order. I take the time to get my client’s measurements at no extra cost. Once I complete the order, the piece I make is one of a kind that no one else in the world will own. I love making women feel included, because sizing in the fashion industry can be confusing and tiring. My hope is to make sure women feel glamorous and like their best selves.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting me in LA for a week I would take them to:

– The Hollywood Museum for some history
– Grand Central Market for great eats
– The Broad to get inspired by the artwork
– Watch a movie at one of the Rooftop Cinema Club locations
– Eat a hot dog at Pink’s
– Ride an Echo Park Swan
– Watch a Burlesque show at Pour Vous

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who have made my journey possible. First and foremost, my parents who have allowed me to express my creativity since I was young. My brothers for paving the way and providing advice and encouragement. My mentor, Rebecca Force for being a guiding light in my life. Finally, my friends and clients – from day one of my small business, you believed in me and supported my products. It all means the world to me!
