We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorie Charles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lorie, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
My family is from Haiti, but I was born and raised here in the U.S. I lived in Brooklyn during my elementary years and my family moved shortly after to a different part of NYC. My people have suffered extensively. We still do. We’ve been exploited, bruised and beaten. Despite this, I find inspiration in their resilience and grit. We don’t give up, we fight for what we want. I live by this. I remember this any time I come across a challenge. I remind myself of my parents’ hard work, and the work of my ancestors. I might bend, but I won’t break.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Crocheting has always been something I’ve done. I began in middle school and would make pieces here and there but it wasn’t until 2020 that I committed to the idea of crocheting apparel and accessories. I love all things beauty and fashion, and I am constantly inspired by designers and their work. Crocheting allows me to express this while tying in my culture. The bright colors, the textures and patterns, all tell a story.

Getting to where I am now took quite sometime. Most of it was due to self doubt. We often talk ourselves out of what we are called to do because we believe the market is oversaturated. We forget that we’re limited edition. There’s only one of us. Tapping into my individuality, studying fashion trends, asking for help when needed, propelled me forward. Was it easy? Not always. I had to constantly remind myself that slow progress is still progress. Where I started is not where I’ll stay.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d automatically take them to Brooklyn. That is the melting pot. So much life, so much love, so much culture there. Flatbush, Williamsburg, Park Slope, Brooklyn is the place to be!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without God I am nothing. His grace has carried me this far, I’d also like to thank each and every single person that has ever shared, bought, liked my clothing and accessories. Specifically, I’d like to thank my close friends and family for encouraging me and supporting me. I cherish my circle. The sleepless nights, the extensive work, the trial and errors were all endured with my village. I wouldn’t be here without them.
