We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorraine Marcus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lorraine, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My process of beginning my artistic journey was based on my motivation and passion. This was derived from my life story embedded with various experiences. Each experience fed my need to create meaningful artwork.

A fellow local artist had a glimpse at my creations and motivated me to do a solo exhibition which proved to be a success, resulting in me further pursuing my ambition of expressing myself through my art.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I consider my art to be an extension of myself. I am my art and my art is me. When others view my artwork, I have often been told that it strikes them as visual poetry. It was never just a hobby, but a carefully studied and implemented process. I explored various methodologies of expression through art which led to it becoming my driving force.

Artistic expression through various mediums played a large role. I faced several challenges, however, I remained connected with my ultimate passion which only grew as time went by – like feeding wood to the flame. I am a woman, a mother, a wife, and a widow. Each category of my being came with its own challenges and setbacks which led to moments of self-doubt and hindrance – that being said there were also moments of light and celebration that kept me going. Both of these experiences were translated on my canvas with each stroke of my brush directed by the narrative that surrounded me.

I celebrate diversity. This is expressed through my use of vibrant colours and my aim to evoke a poetic experience. This need of being creative fueled my desire to share my story and positive messages with as many people as possible. To sum it all up, I see life as building blocks of experiences that form chapters of your story to self-discovery.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is an interesting question because I perhaps wouldn’t be too confined to just my city.so I would like to say Cape Town in South Africa. It is a wonderful place with layers of natural beauty and curated experiences. I would start off at an AirBnB and then head to one of the lovely diverse restaurants in the area. I would then take them to all the art sites and try and tackle as many as possible. Going through the scenic routes and experiencing the seas are a must, however, the most crucial aspect of the trip would be experiencing diversity through the people, spaces, and forms.

I believe that makes the trip more memorable and exciting! A story is what captivates my soul and I would love to share that experience with my friends.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To my late husband, Barry Marcus, who encouraged me to pursue my artistic vision and never let me get held back by self-doubt and criticisms. To my former art teacher, Gail Machanic who always stimulated my imagination and motivated me to push the envelope of self-expression. And finally, Ricky Burnett, who recognized my inimitable style which helped me recognize the originality of my work.
