We had the good fortune of connecting with Louisa Foong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Louisa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I first launched Pine Music Academy, I felt like I was navigating without a map! I even thought, ‘Am I crazy for even considering this?’ It was smack during the Covid-19 pandemic when I had plenty of hours to ponder life’s twists and turns. Amidst all that reflection, I couldn’t shake the memories of the amazing individuals who’ve played a part in shaping me into the musician I am today—my teachers, mentors, and peers. That’s when I realized my skills and musicianship could serve a greater purpose.

Looking back, I realize music education has always been woven into my life. I started music lessons at almost four years old, and right after high school, I began teaching music lessons. Later, I was even hired as a tutor at Berklee College of Music, where I studied. So, I guess the idea of starting my music academy shouldn’t be too shocking overall, but timeline-wise launching the business during a pandemic when everything felt uncertain, still doesn’t entirely make sense to me. But hey, now it’s part of our story, right?

Sure, I didn’t have stacks of cash to kick things off, which had me questioning my sanity. But I figured, hey, gotta start somewhere! So, I leaped, making the most of what I had and learning as I went along.

It’s been quite a rollercoaster ride, filled with doubts, but also punctuated by moments of clarity and fulfillment. Through it all, though, my vision never wavered: I wanted to create a haven where budding musicians could thrive, where creativity was king, and where the love of music could spread like wildfire. Despite the doubts, the hurdles, and the occasional sleepless night, I must say it’s been a very rewarding journey thus far.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Beyond my roles as a producer, pianist, composer, and arranger, Pine Music Academy holds a special place in my heart. Its inception wasn’t just a business decision but a deeply personal journey that unfolded during the challenging times of the pandemic. In the quiet moments of reflection that the pandemic afforded me, I rediscovered my profound love for teaching—a passion that has been with me since my early days after high school. Drawing from over 13 years of experience teaching in various music studios, I felt a strong pull to create something of my own. And so, Pine Music Academy came to life in 2021 as an online school, with the recent addition of in-person lessons marking a significant milestone. As we approach our fourth anniversary this November, I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished.

Professionally, my journey has been nothing short of miraculous, and I attribute much of it to divine intervention, God. There were countless uncertainties along the way, but I was fortunate to be surrounded by a loving community of family, friends, and mentors who continually encouraged me not to give up. It certainly wasn’t easy, especially navigating the hills and valleys of post-college life when adulthood kicked in with full force. However, every season, even the ones filled with waiting and uncertainty, has played a vital role in shaping my character and helping me discover my true passions and loves.

Throughout the challenges, I leaned heavily on faith, family, and friends for support. Their unwavering belief in me kept me going even when things seemed impossible. Every setback taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of staying true to my passions, even in the face of adversity.

What do I want the world to know about me and Pine Music Academy? I want everyone to understand that passions and dreams can extend far beyond oneself; they can serve a greater purpose and impact generations. As the founder of Pine Music Academy, my aspirations are ambitious. I aim to make Pine Music a platform for fostering relationships and community through the tool of music and music education. My ultimate goal is to extract the best potential from our students as they grow as creatives. Pine Music Academy isn’t just about teaching music; it’s about empowering individuals to reach their fullest artistic potential and make a lasting impact on the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is an absolute playground for foodies – seriously, the options are endless and incredibly fun! First up, let’s talk coffee! My top picks include Millcross Coffee, Coffee Commissary, Blue Bottle, and goodboybob – all serving up some seriously good stuff! Oh, and a quick shoutout to Coffee Commissary for their drool-worthy ‘Angelino Burrito’ – trust me, it’s a game-changer!

Now onto the food scene: You can’t visit LA without exploring Koreatown. Think Sun Nong Dan, JunTong Sul LungTang, Jinsol Gukbap, and Dang Sung Sa – food that truly comforts the soul! For KBBQ options, try Quarters, Jjukku Jjukku, or Hae Jang Chon. And if you’re up for some amazing dim sum and other Southeast Asian cousins, head over to Monterey Park or Rowland Heights. For epic sushi vibes, Irori Sushi and Kanpai should be on your list!

Brunch lovers, The Sycamore Kitchen, Gjusta, and Blu Jam Cafe are where it’s at. The crunchy French toast at Blu Jam Cafe – pure brunch heaven!

Now, onto the sightseeing shenanigans: Griffith Observatory offers jaw-dropping views and a touch of space adventure, while LACMA and The Getty Museum are perfect for getting your art fix and soaking in that iconic LA skyline.

Feeling outdoorsy? Hiking is a must! Check out Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, Wisdom Tree trail, Hollywood Sign hike, or Los Liones trail. And for the most breathtaking sunsets, head to Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, Malibu, or Point Dume – you won’t be disappointed!

When the sun sets, if you’re into a more chill nightlife like me, Santa Monica is probably your best bet. They have many outdoor patio options and some even feature live music! Cocktails and live music, a perfect pairing for the evening. Or if you prefer more of a rooftop bar vibe, you would love Downtown LA.

Another idea, plan to catch a show at the legendary Hollywood Bowl – a summer must-do!

I think this is a pretty epic itinerary! Your trip to LA is guaranteed to be a blast haha.
Fun fact about me, I run a food blog because, well, I’m obsessed with food! If you’d like more food spot recommendations, make sure to follow me @slurpnburpwithlouisa.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s like assembling a puzzle with all the pieces of support and encouragement I’ve received throughout my musical journey. While I might not be able to mention everyone, I’ll try my best to give credit where it’s due.

First and foremost, my heartfelt gratitude goes to my family and relatives. They’ve been my rock, my cheerleaders, my everything. And to my friends, near and far, you’ve been my partners in crime and my sounding board for all my crazy ideas.

A huge shoutout to my mentors, teachers, and college professors—you’ve not only imparted knowledge but also instilled in me the confidence to chase my dreams.

My church family and leaders in LA, you’ve been my home away from home. Your support and love have been a constant source of strength.

To everyone else who has crossed my path, whether it was for a brief moment or a lifetime, thank you. Each interaction has left a mark on me, shaping me into who I am today.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in me, for inspiring me, and for being part of my journey. Here’s to many more adventures ahead!
