We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Gros and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Go into business only with those people you trust and admire! In my opinion, who you choose as your partner(s) is the most important decision you’ll make in that career.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The concept of Steelcraft came from a desire to bring good, quality food and beer (in an inviting space made of shipping containers) to the people of Long Beach and surrounding cities. SteelCraft is a value driven organization, built around “Community, Restoration, and the Culinary Experience.” The idea with this concept was to truly bring “dead things” to life — to give energy, breath, and hope to neighborhoods in need of community (this is one of ways in which we set ourselves apart). We opened SteelCraft Long Beach in February 2017, Bellflower in June 2019, and Garden Grove in September 2019.
What you are most proud of? I love that you can walk into any of the three locations and the customers are diverse, making up the DNA of that particular city. It attracts all walks of life, and that’s my most favorite things about the space!
How did you get to where you are today business-wise? By choosing really good partners — partners that possess different giftings and talents than I.
Lessons I’ve learned: Keep your day job while dreaming and conceptualizing other business ideas you want to pursue! Choose wisely who you will go into business with (it makes all the difference). Be passionate about what you pursue — or at least be confident of the gap that you’re filling. Create strong values and keep to them!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my family (husband, sister, mom, and dad) who would sit and listen to all of my crazy ideas (literally for hours). And in that, they never laughed or ridiculous the various ideas — but rather would sit with wonder, asking great questions and celebrating the curiosity.
