We had the good fortune of connecting with Louise Royer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Louise, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
My source of happiness comes from witnessing the joy on other people’s faces, which is why I strive to create entertaining and engaging work, such as social media content, virtual and augmented reality experiences. My family and friends are all around the globe due to my frequent travels and living on three different continents. As a result, I am motivated to produce work that can bring them laughter and joy, regardless of our physical distance. Witnessing the happiness of those around me fills me with joy and is the ultimate reward for my efforts.

Currently, I am employed as a full-time lead user experience (UX) and interface (UI) designer and content manager for an online magazine, where I am responsible for redesigning the entire platform and creating engaging content. On a daily basis, I hold meetings with developers in the morning to discuss necessary changes and fixes for the platform, while in the afternoon I design the platform and create content. Additionally, I work as an Extended Reality (XR) designer during the night as a self-employed professional. This involves the incorporation of digital elements into real-world environments, including augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and virtual reality (VR). My tasks range from designing social media filters and creating VR experiences for various brands. My current project involves creating an XR fashion show.
I faced challenges in discovering my passion while studying filmmaking in a new city without any connections. I struggled with homesickness and a lack of direction during my first year, but eventually changed my major to multimedia in my second year, hoping to pursue video editing. However, adjusting to a new university was difficult, and I still felt lost. The pandemic hit during my sophomore year, and I returned to Hong Kong to be with my family where I started a video and photo editing business. It was during my junior year, while studying remotely in France, that I discovered my love for 3D modeling and programming. This led to the creation of a successful project that boosted my confidence. I gained further confidence by facing various challenges, including entering a 30-hour hackathon, skydiving to overcome my fear of heights, and overcoming public speaking anxiety. It was then that I discovered UX/UI/XR design and opened my own business, making friends and connections along the way. Through this journey, I learned that finding my passion required trying new hobbies and being unafraid to ask for help.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to visit me in Los Angeles, I would be thrilled to take them to all of my favorite places. Here is an itinerary that I would suggest for a week-long trip: On the first day, we would begin with a walk from Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach, where we could observe the skaters at the skatepark. Later on, we would watch the sunset at the High Rooftop Lounge and then have dinner at Forma, an outstanding Italian restaurant. After dinner, we would check out Dreamscape, which offers a thrilling VR experience where we could take on the MIB Assignment.
The second day would commence with brunch at Loulou, a French-Californian restaurant in Santa Monica, followed by a road trip to Death Valley, where we would visit Badwater Basin and Dante’s View. At night, we would camp and gaze at the stars.
We would go to Las Vegas on the third day, a one-of-a-kind city, to explore the architecture, hotels, and the famous Las Vegas Strip. We would also attend a Zedd concert at Zouk, our favorite DJ.
On the fourth day, we would return to Los Angeles and have a relaxing evening at the rooftop bar of Mama Shelter, which has stunning views of the Hollywood sign.
The fifth day would begin with brunch at The Breakfast Club in Hollywood, followed by a hike starting from the Wisdom Tree, behind the Hollywood sign, and finishing at Griffith Observatory to observe the sunset and the city lights turning on. For dinner, we would go to In-N-Out, a well-known burger restaurant.
We would explore Downtown LA on the sixth day, starting with brunch at Grand Central Market, followed by a visit to The Broad and the Disney Concert Hall. For dinner, we would find a taco truck, and then watch a Clippers basketball game.
We would start the last day with a morning surf at Porto in Manhattan Beach or Malibu, followed by brunch at North End Caffe in Manhattan or Malibu Farm Cafe. We would then participate in a hot yoga session at Core Power Yoga and finish the day by watching the sunset at the beach. For dinner, we would go to Mel’s Drive-In in Beverly Hills.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Although it may come across as cliché, I would like to express my gratitude towards my parents. My father, who has a keen interest in technology, was responsible for buying me my first computer at the age of seven. He introduced me to the world of video games and the internet, and he was the one who introduced me to the concept of Web3. He is always up to date with the latest trends in technology. On the other hand, my mother is an incredibly creative person. She fostered my creativity as a child by introducing me to drawing and photography. She encouraged me and my sister to be imaginative and never stifle our creativity. Both of my parents are avid travelers, and I have been fortunate enough to visit 24 different countries with them. This has made me more open-minded about the world and has fueled my desire to learn about different cultures and how they utilize design and technology. It’s fascinating to see how the use of design and technology varies from country to country. My parents are adored by all due to their kind and patient nature, as well as their sense of humor. They are always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, and their support is unwavering. Additionally, they inspire me to chase after my career aspirations and to explore life, as they believe this is the best way to gain knowledge and experience.
