Meet Lucas Camargo | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucas Camargo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucas, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My first memory is around drawing, I always come back to that feeling, I like to think whatever these first memories we have, they have a huge factor in embodying what we perceive as happiness, it is something so powerful that called my attention then and was always surrounding me, so was a no brainer to follow the artistic path and keep coming back to it as these paths deviate, always reassured me it was the right way for me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I will say I always liked to draw, art, etc, I ended up doing Design School and working in Advertising most of my career but I never felt I deserved to be called an Artist. In 2017 I reached a peak in my advertising career where I had a good-paying job but was rendering my life miserable, I was not happy with my work and my personal life was in a downfall. I decided to quit advertising and wanted to start from scratch in animation, something I always loved, in the same week I quit my job my wife at that time wanted a divorce, so that moment was a breaking point in ways I was not expecting and prepared, I did went to a place of questioning everything and was in a dark place for a long time. That event showed me 2 ways, you can either be miserable or you can look at it in the eyes and see what’s left, what is you in the crumbs, Drawing was this thing that connected me back, I started to draw every day, anything that I was feeling, and I kept doing, posting it on social media, and moving forward, that with time turned on something that I can only describe as fire, I never felt like that, is an urge to create, is a 24/7 feel, I then realized that is my voice, my art, and finally accepted I think I am an artist. The relationship with this creative flame is something that got me excited about life like never before and is what pushed me to do the most meaningful things I have ever done, I am proud of the body of ideas and reflections I am registering with my characters as I touch other people and get me dialoguing with my purpose here.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in NYC, and if we say we hanging out here, it definitely would be a bike ride in the city, Biking through NY was something that helped me to get grounded with the world next to me, the feeling of seeing the gradients between neighborhoods, instead of a portal jump from one place to another, is like you feeling this giant creature you habit, alive, breathing and so inspiring, we could go places like Coney Island feel the ocean breeze in that decay setting, or go down Broadway and feel small between the giant buildings, so many places with a unique energy. I love to see things that existed before me, that didn’t get washed out with glass, steel, gray, and sadness, and NY has plenty of that.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I guess it can’t be anything else but my family, I could be the most talented inspired human ever, but without nurturing and support from those who were here before I existed, I could render all that to nothing. Being an artistic person comes with a huge bag of preconceived things, and in the simplicity they are, they did not push or take it from me, but just were there and supported me so whatever fear and not-so-sure feeling could have its time and privilege to bloom. I could make a huge list of amazing places, artists, etc that inspired me but I feel that is just a natural part of my wonder with these things, I am magnetized to them, so my family is the stone that supported me by just being there and enabling in these initial moments in life.
