We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucy Valentine and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lucy, how do you think about risk?
To me, taking risks is really important. I couldn’t imagine a career without getting out of my comfort zone to create things that haven’t been seen or heard. With the way that music and art has progressed I feel that taking risks is a natural part of my process and has separated me from any similar artists. The only way I plan on succeeding is continuing to take risks and not care about what society “expects” from me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Music has always been extremely fluid to me so in the last year or so I have moved into the world of electronic pop. I am very inspired by women punk bands, Chicago house, and hyper pop. Because I am both a recording artist and a dj I’ve been able to incorporate both of those passions into one another giving me a very unique sound. The challenges I faced as a queer artist when I was a teenager compared to now are night and day. My experience hasn’t always been as easy as it is now, but I’m extremely grateful for the queer artists who have paved the way for me to be authentically me. I’m incredibly excited for the future of music and for people like me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
La is such a diverse city with so many fun things to do and see. When we’re not working, my friends and i spend a lot of time in Malibu at the beach, or going out to eat. Our favorite spots are Sonora town in dtla, sqirl in echo park, and shibuya in the valley. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be the artist that I am or making the music that I make without the help and support from my producer Piazzi (@urpalpiazzi). There isn’t anyone on this planet who pushes me harder as an artist and I truly can’t imagine a career without him. Someone who I believe is breaking all sound barriers and taking unforgettable risks.
