Meet Lukas Geppert | Film Composer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lukas Geppert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lukas, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
To become a professional film composer in Los Angeles has been my dream since I was a kid! Ever since I started to play piano when I was five, I loved playing and listening to film scores and I am super happy that I could make this passion to my daily job now! As film composers we are all driven to tell a story and to create emotions – and that’s what I always wanted to do – to tell the story and to evoke emotions with music. Thus, I knew I had to put in all the time and effort to make it from Germany to Los Angeles.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey as a media composer and producer is all due to my artistic background. I started out producing and writing songs for bands. Thus, this production aspect has been always super influential to my film scores. I take immense pride in my diverse portfolio, which spans various mediums. I especially loved to combine my passion for music with my biggest hobby – soccer. And when I was asked to write music for the documentary 24/7 FC, which is about one of the biggest German soccer clubs, the 1.FC Köln, I was blown away. To hear my music for the show been played in their home stadium in the biggest game of last season in front of over 40000 fans was a dream come true. I still get goosebumps today when I think back at it. To unite music and sports was truly a dream come true.
My path has been far from easy, but every challenge has reinforced my dedication to the artistic side of music creation. Starting from classical training in the small town in Germany, Bayreuth, I pursued Music Technology at the University of West London, where I was educated in all production and technical aspects of this job.
I got then the master’s degree from USC, where I’ve had the privilege of working in prestigious studios, such as Warner Brothers scoring stage.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Of course! If my best friend were visiting for a week, we’d start with Hollywood for some iconic landmarks. Then, we’d head to Santa Monica to soak up the beach vibes and explore the Pier.
I also love the complete different vibe of Malibu or Manhattan Beach. Its so peaceful and calm there that you can really get a chill rest from the stress of the city!
But above all, what truly makes LA special is the company you share these experiences with. It’s the people and the memories that make it the best time ever.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am grateful to have had amazing mentors such as Thomas Newman and German composer Armin Haas. Their guidance and advice has helped me both musically but also as a professional person here!
