We had the good fortune of connecting with Lygia Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lygia, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pursue an artistic and creative career to express my true authenticity through my work. I’m the Owner of Rae’s of Sunshine Catering, Down Home Southern Cooking reminiscent to Grandma’s hands. Nostalgia for the soul. I’ve always wanted to be a Caterer and make people’s taste buds dance. It’s how I show my love and my passion for the food I present. The type of love that you not only can feel, but can see and taste it, too! While pursuing my career in Catering, I discovered my purpose and created a way to use my platform to fulfill it. How cool is it, that you can combine your love for cooking and making sure that no one goes to bed hungry? Exciting, right?! I’m currently apart of an amazing Organization called Project 43 and I’m a Vendor Against Hunger. We are advocating for the nearly 22,000 people who go without food or to bed hungry at night. I have the power to be apart of that change and do something about it. It takes a Village! I feel like it’s my duty to serve them with warm food and compassion. And I do every chance I get. I feed them for free during events and will make plates to pass out through the neighborhood. That makes my heart happy. It’s beautiful when you love what you do and can impact others while doing it 🖤
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is that nobody can be me. That is my power. Everyone is given their map into their assignment. What God has for you can’t be messed with. It’s my time and I’ve done a lot of work to be in this position. It’s not easy, but it’s so worth it! I’m just excited that I’m walking in my manifestations- that everything I said I wanted to do; I’m doing it. It’s no longer a book full of goals, it’s my life now and I’m ecstatic! I was a Bus Driver because I had to provide for my family. During the pandemic, I was laid off and had to find another way to provide, so I put everything I had into building my Catering Business and must say that it’s the best move that I’ve ever made professionally. I get to wake up and love what I do on my terms. And it’s beautiful watching it blossom into this Masterpiece. Everything you encounter is a teachable moment. Embrace it! Live in it! You’re always learning lessons. I want the world to know that everyone will have the opportunity for me to make their taste buds dance. I’m not going anywhere no time soon! I can’t wait to meet you. Rae’s of Sunshine Catering is dedicated to showing you love on a plate🌻
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is filled with so many beautiful things that it’s hard to narrow down my faves! My absolute favorite things to do is go to the Beach. I love to oversee the city at night because the scenery is impeccable. My favorite food is Mexican, so if I’m not cooking then, we’ll head over to La Barca’s, Fiesta Martin or El Cholos. All the Black owned spots are AMAZING!!! Food Trucks as well🤤
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give the biggest shout out to my beautiful wife Amber for constantly staying by my side and being my rock. She gives me so much support and always investing in me. I love her entire life! Check out her Hair and Skin Care line Kemetically Speaking. Real results for Real people. I would also like to shout out my favorite person, my sis Lalauine. She always offers amazing support and a positive perspective to me personally and my business. She’s a gem. Check out her online clothing store BlackEgo that has all the ladies dressing in confidence. And to my biggest Muses of all! My babies; Amerae, La’Raea, Raelyn, and King’Rae! Mommie loves you with everything in me and will always provide you with something good to follow.
