Meet Madeline Doherty | Creative Producer and Screenwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Madeline Doherty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madeline, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
The first year, I was non-stop and it’s not for the faint of heart — there is no such thing as balance in the infancy of starting your own business. There are so many moving parts. Every waking moment was spent building my clientele, acquiring the skillset to operate a camera and all the tech aspects that fall under the umbrella of production/post-production, as well as creating a formula that would be long-lasting. After that first year, the hard work paid off, and for any creatives (struggling like I was at that time) keep putting the work in, even after the sleepless night and second-guessing every little thing, it will all pay off…trust in that — I was in a position, financially and with credit to my name, where I could pick and choose projects versus the non-stop grind of taking on any and every opportunity. That being said, I loved every arduous minute of it – you have to really enjoy the process.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I still do a fair amount of video work but now most of my efforts are in screenwriting. I finished three new scripts this year, and most of my work including my first short film, Intersect (2021) falls under the horror genre. My newest, however, Illegitimate Lee, is an action thriller…a “Taken meets Joe Dirt.”
Hide Her — During a blizzard and what should be a celebratory weekend, two couples neglect their stranded guest’s warnings until her masked pursuers invade the home. With nowhere to run, they must work together to keep her and each other alive but something far more sinister is at play as the stranger soon suspects one couple isn’t who they appear to be.
Dew — Two women are reunited after more than a decade, trapped in an underground pool maze with no idea how they got there or why until the cruel truth about a missing girl from their past and one decision that marked them forever, all come bubbling to the surface.
And…Illegitimate Lee — Honeydew trailer park’s most notorious residents, the southern outlaw Lee family take measures into their own hands when their teenage sister falls prey to a powerful sex trafficking ring.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It depends on the city but my go-to is always a great dinner followed by a comedy show or activity that we can do outside.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I interned at a media agency (Clients: Spotify, Volkswagon, Hulu…) the summer before I graduated college. It was daunting, to say the least when I turned down the opportunity (which I am still very grateful for to this day) to work there. Influencer marketing and monetizing the social media space was still a nuanced marketing tool when I first started out. Thus, I could feel eyes roll when people asked what my post-grad plans were. That’s where the relentless support of my parents came in. My confidence and vigorous determination (although at times your ego kicks in and you want to quit) are solely due to their faith in me.
