We had the good fortune of connecting with Maëlle Milligan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maëlle, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose to pursue a creative career due to my deep passion for artistic expression and my desire to create something new and meaningful. Since a young age, I’ve been drawn to visual arts and have found true joy in the process of creation. Art allows me to express myself in a unique and personal way, to communicate my emotions, ideas, and worldview.
Photography, in particular, has captivated me from the beginning. I’ve been fascinated by its ability to freeze fleeting moments, capture intense emotions, and tell stories. It provides a visual form of expression that enables me to explore different perspectives, play with light, colors, and compositions to create images that evoke emotion and provoke thought in viewers.
As a photographer, I’ve sought to address political issues through my work, whether by documenting protests, shedding light on social problems, or capturing powerful portraits that convey social and political messages. Photography enables me to give a voice to the marginalized and amplify stories that need to be heard. I firmly believe that art and photography have the power to change the world by inspiring awareness, fostering empathy, and inciting action.
I’ve pursued a career in photography to express my unique worldview, create emotional connections, but also to harness the political power of art to stimulate discussions, raise awareness, and contribute to social change. Photography is a potent means to shed light on political issues and promote justice and equality. It is an essential aspect of my artistic practice and a meaningful way for me to engage with the world around me.
For me, pursuing an artistic career is more than a choice, it’s a vital duty that fills me with passion and satisfaction.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Getting to where I am today professionally has been a journey filled with challenges, growth, and perseverance. It certainly wasn’t easy, but each obstacle I encountered along the way served as a valuable lesson and an opportunity for personal and professional development.
One of the significant challenges I faced was establishing myself as a photographer in a competitive industry. Building a client base and gaining recognition required dedication, hard work, and a relentless pursuit of improvement. I overcame these challenges by continuously honing my craft, seeking opportunities for learning and growth, and never losing sight of my passion for photography.
Another hurdle was navigating the business side of my career. Managing finances, marketing my services, and establishing a strong brand presence were tasks that required a different skill set. I learned to adapt and acquire business acumen through research, networking, and seeking guidance from mentors and professionals in the field.
Throughout this journey, I’ve learned valuable lessons. I learned the importance of resilience, staying true to my artistic vision, and embracing failure as a stepping stone to success. Each setback or rejection taught me to persevere, refine my approach, and keep pushing forward. I also discovered the significance of building genuine connections with clients and fostering long-term relationships based on trust and collaboration.
What I want the world to know about is that everything is possible for those who dare, love, work hard, and never give up. Regardless of our age, situation, or history, everything comes in due time. This conviction has guided my journey.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting me in Los Angeles, I would plan an exciting week-long itinerary to show them the best time ever.
First, I would take them to Grand Central Market in downtown LA for a diverse range of culinary delights. We’d enjoy delicious tacos at Tacos Tumbras a Tomas or try some authentic ramen at Ramen Hood.
Next, we’d explore the vibrant nightlife scene in the Arts District. We’d grab drinks at EightyTwo, a retro arcade bar, and then head to The Edison for a speakeasy experience with live music and unique cocktails. It would be a night to remember!
For a leisurely lunch, I’d choose The Butcher’s Daughter, a trendy plant-based restaurant in Venice Beach known for its vibrant atmosphere and healthy menu.
And of course, we couldn’t miss out on exploring the trendy neighborhood of Silver Lake, famous for its hipster vibes and unique shops. We’d definitely have to grab brunch at Sqirl, one of my all-time favorite spots in LA! This popular café offers a delightful selection of innovative and delicious breakfast options that never disappoints. It’s like a hidden gem that I cherish. It’s my secret spot, don’t tell anyone!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my mother, as she has been an endless source of inspiration, support, and motivation throughout my photography career. It is thanks to her unconditional love and constant encouragement that I was able to pursue my passion and embark on this artistic path.
My mother has always believed in me and my creative abilities. She has been there every step of the way, urging me to explore my creativity, develop my skills, and push my boundaries. Her words of encouragement and invaluable advice have given me the confidence to persevere through challenges and pursue my dreams.
I am deeply grateful to my mother for everything she has done and continues to do for me. Her loving presence and positive influence have shaped my artistic career and enabled me to become the person and photographer I am today. It is to her that I dedicate this shoutout, expressing my eternal gratitude and acknowledging her essential role in my artistic journey.
