Meet Maggie F. Johnson | Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maggie F. Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maggie F., what makes you happy? Why?
Doing something with my hands. It doesn’t matter if it is making clothes, playing an instrument, cooking a good meal, or shooting hoops, I need to be doing something physical like that.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think there is a certain je ne sais quoi with being able to express yourself in a truly authentic way, while still taking inspiration from everything around you and the things you ingest everyday. No matter what kind of art form I am working with, I often find my brain conceptualizing things faster than my hands can keep up with and physically making. Overall, there is a broad picture in my head where it all fits together. While my degree is in Music Business, professionally and currently I am not technically not working in that field but, I find it very easy to translate into the clothes I make, since that is my main focus at this time, but I could at any time sooner or later drop fashion and go back to expressing myself more musically. I can’t exactly put it into words, but sometimes I sketch garments and other times my “sketches” are sheet music or lyrics. In the end, they’ll all work together someday, whether that is in a full blown fashion show with pieces I’ve designed along to music I’ve composed, or an album where I design the visuals and vibe that fits with it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them out clubbing and then in the morning we would sleep in and go to brunch. I’m not so much of a social leader, so I would introduce them to some of my friends that have a definite place they want to go and see where the night or next day takes us, just going with the flow at any time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Grandmother on my Mother’s side (Grandma Bawk-Bawk as I so lovingly named her as a child because she owns chickens). Grandma Bawk-Bawk worked with me sewing when I was younger because I had a collection of American Girl Dolls, and the company offered clothes so you could march the dolls, but most sizes they offered were too small for me in the sleeve length and pant leg, since I’ve always been tall for my age. So my Mom (knowing the basics of a sewing machine) and my Grandma (knowing more intricate details of pattern making and technique) would teach me how to make matching garments for my dolls and I.
