We had the good fortune of connecting with Maggie Jorgenson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maggie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Violent Pink Productions came about, as many creative ideas do, sharing stories over a glass of wine with a great group of friends. As queer, female artists, we all wanted a space to tell our narratives; a place where we saw ourselves as the leads, not just the side characters. And from that giggly, drunken eve — VPP was born! Violent Pink is a daring new production house that develops independent media, focusing on bold, female-centric narratives.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a queer female artist, what makes me the most excited about my work is that I continually get to work with passionate, exceptional creatives who are dedicated to bringing new and impactful narratives into the media. Too often I think LGBTQ+ and female characters are depicted as one-dimesional, secondary, or stereotypical. While I believe this is beginning to change, I want to be at the forefront of making sure we’re not just ticking boxes, but actually writing and representing multi-faceted humans. This starts behind the scenes; in the writer’s room, on the production team, and with casting decisions. Today, I am at just the beginning of my career, but I look forward to breaking open the mold of what media has been and pushing the boundaries of storytelling.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a huge foodie and wine snob, so I hope you brought your strechy pants! I’d start off the day in Malibu at Paradise Cove. We’d rent a set of lounge chairs and just enjoy the sun. For dinner, I’d bring them to the Grove where we’d grab the kale chicken salad and a bottle of Sancere at Monseiur Marcel. After that, we’d change into our clubbing clothes and head up to Hollywood and Wilcox to see magic and listen to music at Black Rabbit Rose and No Vacancy. The next morning we’d hike off our hangovers at Temescal Canyon, then go for brunch at Great White in Venice. If there’s more time, I’d suggest biking the strand from Venice to Matthatan Beach, having a Bonfire at Dockweiler, and enjoying the cute shops and bars of Atwater Village.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So, sooo many people!! Obviously first, my family. I grew up in a creative household and was always encouraged to be artistic in a multitude of ways — from just playing pretend in my backyard to participating in musicals to taking photography classes. Art was at the center of my childhood and I will forever be grateful to my mom, my dad, and my younger brother for their constant love and support. I also have to shout out my first drama teacher, Anna Carlson, who helped shape the artist I am today and gave me the opportunities I needed to grow and learn as a creative. Finally, forever the best partner, Lauren Henning. She is my rock and I’m constantly inspired by her own brilliance and accomplishments as a storyteller. There’s no one I’d rather create and collaborate with. There’s been so many other friendships and partnerships that have influenced me and I hope there will be many more in the future.
