We had the good fortune of connecting with Maia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maia, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“It’s never too late to become who you always wanted to be.”
Even though I have been shooting for years, I didn’t make the leap to becoming a full time photographer until 2013 at the age of 42. It is truly never too late to follow your passion or your dreams!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a fine art nude photographer. I have studied and adored the photographers of the f64 club that paved the way for fine art photography. I see things differently than other photographers and capture that in my art with a unique point of view. I love the lines of the female form and combining that with nature has really improved my art. It has taken awhile to find my niche or strength and in 2019 I finally got to attend a workshop on Wild Cat Hill in Carmel where Edward Weston lived and created many of his images. Edward Weston has always been my favorite photographer and getting to stay there and shoot there was an amazing and inspiring experience and truly helped me realize my path. I realized I may be fabulous at many genres but fine art nude photography makes me truly happy. I also love when a client feels empowered after shooting with me, that makes my heart smile.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First on the list would be The Broad museum, I love going to museums and that one is a great place to start. Next up The Getty Villa and grab a bite at Moonshadows, nothing beats that view! LA is all about food and culture, Olvera street and Chinatown are both great places to experience those. Griffith Park is definitely on the list as its got fantastic views and an observatory. I am a sucker for the stars in the sky.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to William Franz, without his support and encouragement I would have never taken the leap.
