We had the good fortune of connecting with Maka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maka, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Over the years I’ve experienced plenty of roadblocks and setbacks and problems when it comes to pursuing my music career. Of course at times the idea of doing something else (something easier) comes to mind, but at the end of the day, there isn’t anything else out there giving me the feeling of fulfillment that music does. That’s why I will never stop.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is an amalgamation of my experiences in life. I have spent most of my life moving from country to country and from city to city. Throughout this journey I have learned to find comparison where others can’t. That’s why there’s so much variety in my work. I blend styles from different parts of the world together because I want to showcase the uncanny parallels that seemingly unrelated cultures can develop totally isolated from one another.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If we’re talking strictly about LA, the trip is going to be all about Korean food. Everyone knows the Korean food in LA has the highest batting average in the country. And it’s the only place where you can find good iterations of a lot of lesser known Korean dishes like Kalbi Jim and Bossam. In terms of activities I love the modern art scene so I gotta go to some of the museums and galleries downtown with maybe a pit stop at Dover street market depending on how healthy my pockets are feeling. Also we can grab sushi at Sushi Gen if there’s enough time to wait for a seat, if not, one thing you can count on is the constant availability of world class street tacos all across the county.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My partner Casey has had my back through every positive and negative moment for 11 years. She both keeps me grounded and pushes me to be more than I already am.
