Meet Malachi Del Rosario | Composer and Music Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Malachi Del Rosario and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malachi, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I wanted to pursue an artistic career as I realized that from a young age, music has an especially strong emotional connection in my life. I grew up playing piano and saxophone and eventually landed in middle school. Then on out, something clicked for me and with this burning passion, I applied to an arts high school called Oakland School For The Arts in Oakland, California. There I was surrounded with many creative minds and not just musical ones. It was refreshing being able to see all forms of art via theatre, digital media, and visual art as it reminds you that we’re part of a much bigger community than we think. During this time, I learned a lot about what it means to be a musician but more importantly, I learned a lot about what it means to be an artist and it’s someone who creates for the thrill of creation! I live vicariously through this motto as I find plenty of joy creating music for both myself and others!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a musician and composer studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, I’ve invested time into many skills such as Scoring for Media / Film, Conducting, Musical Directing, as well as Composition and I’ve worked with many musicians and artists in a variety of projects as any one of these titles.
That being said, when working with others, I’m often thought of being brought to the team as I’m known to be very organized, dependable, and efficient with my time which truthfully, is something I believe that sets me apart from other musicians. On top of being able to deliver whatever is needed musically, I’m able to remain calm even in stressful situations which happens much more than we think and am able to quickly brainstorm solutions to make sure that everyone’s time was worthwhile.
Aside from creating and working on music for other people via Film, Bands, TV, what I am most proud of is my own musical collection titled, Insomnia: Volume 1. This is a unique project as it is a musical exploration about our sleep and everything else it encompasses such as our regret, fatigue, as well as our dreams and ambitions. I am most proud of this because it is something that I’ve created entirely on my own and I’ve poured every single skill both musically and personally into this ongoing project. It’s pushed me to the limits as a bandleader, director, composer, and throughout the process of starting in February of 2023, I realized that individually, we can accomplish many great things but with others, we can create something that wouldn’t have been possible if done alone. It’s extremely exciting as it’s music that isn’t just music, but an atmospheric ambient experience in itself that allows the audience to contemplate in deep thought. Generally speaking, much of my personal music does exactly this, put the listener in a meditative trance by introducing sounds and concepts unfamiliar to the general ear. As an artist, this is what I live for, being able to find new worldly sounds to convey and paint emotions that we generally are unaware of. That being said, I’m excited for Insomnia: Vol 1’s release towards the end of 2023!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend was visiting me in Boston for a week, I would take them to many great museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Institute of Contemporary Arts! Each of these museums have such great and unique art that you can’t help but feel immensely inspired to create after spending some time in these exhibits.
On top of that, I would take them to the Harvard Arboretum which is essentially a very large public park with many assortments of exotic flowers and trees, a beautiful peaceful distraction from city life.
Regarding food, I will take them to my favorite comfort food spot being Shah’s Hallal Food which is located in Boylston Street.
And lastly I would give them a campus tour of my school Berklee College of Music!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Throughout my entire life, I’ve been blessed with family who thoroughly support all my artistic and creative endeavors. At a young age, I had an idea of what I wanted to do with my life and while there’s been many challenges, their continued love and support certainly keeps me going and I’ve have dedicated many pieces of music that serves as an artistic way of saying “Thank You.”
