We had the good fortune of connecting with Malachi Ledo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malachi, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue an artistic career because it really felt like the only thing that was going to make me happy. I had tried regular office jobs before of course, and it just felt like hours crawled by, days blended together, and every weekend just became filled with dread for the upcoming work week. As soon as I started music though, that was when I discovered how much fun work could actually be. Music is the only job where I’ve found I can start work on a project, and then look up at the clock and six hours has flown by and I didn’t even realize. I want that feeling for the rest of my life, I never want to dread having to go somewhere for the rest of my life ever again.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is whatever I want it to be. I wish I had learned sooner that trying to make what you think people want to hear will never work. That’s just the nature of the beast though, and a necessary step in the creative process. Now I make just whatever kind of music I want to hear, and hope that other people want to hear it too.
Music is never easy, and honestly it usually becomes more about just trying to last as long as possible in the music scene. I have been doing music part-time for about 7 years, full time for 2, and the amount of people I have know that no longer make music continues to grow. Not everyone is cut out for the constant rejection and self-doubt that it can bring, but that’s why support systems are so important.
I would just want the world to know that any music you hear from me comes from a place of absolute love for the source material. I make music inspired by movies, video games, anime, etc., and it’s all properties that I absolutely adore. Anything you hear by me, comes from a place of being touched by inspiration on a deeper level.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always find these places are big hits for people who are visiting: motion picture museum, universal studios, griffith observatory, hike the abandoned LA zoo, magnolia street for thirifting and coffee, the last bookstore, pantages theater for a show, walk around manhattan beach, take the amtrack for a day trip to Santa Barbara.
As for food, there’s always an abundance of places to eat in japan town. If they wanted coffee we’d go to either alfred coffee or rad coffee. I’ve loved everything I’ve tried at the alameda night market. I’d also take them to wild living foods, Lucifer pizza, bagel boss, and easy street burger.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe all of this to my wife. She is the most supportive person I have ever known. She is the one who encouraged me to jump into this full time when we moved to California, Any day that I’m feeling down or discouraged about my abilities she’s always there to encourage me and pick me up. There’s no one I’m more excited to tell about my victories than her. I have her to thank for all of this, and I’ll always appreciate all her love and support.
