We had the good fortune of connecting with Malie Mason and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malie, what do you attribute your success to?
I think that success is simply being a vessel for whatever it is that tells you to make your work manifest. That can be any business. Before I do any shoot or creative session, I light a candle and ask my angels to tell me what they want to make manifest and in return, I promise to ask no questions. Ignore the idea of being perceived in any way, and just do what your heart tells you to do.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always loved practical effects and puppetry. Movies like Legend and Dark Crystal seemed impossibly perfect to me. I was doing stand up comedy and acting for over 12 years but I’ve always loved tinkering with effects and editing. The less logic, the better.
I designed my puppet, Estelle, for a film I was working on, but the project was pushed because I got another job being the face of a mushroom tea company. During that time, I had the privilege of honing my skills editing, writing and shooting on vintage cameras.
But suddenly, the company dissolved and I went through a terrible depression.
I did a meditation to ask the universe what to do and it told me to do whatever I did when I was a child. So I stayed in my room for 5 days straight and created The Malie Show with Estelle.
What did I learn ? That when you make art for other people, it’s often your worst work. But I am grateful for the practice and it really all happens for a reason.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
1. Bob bakers marionette theater. 2. Hike Escondido Falls in Malibu followed by lunch at The Reel Inn
3. See a film at Vidiots in Eagle Rock
4. Take a dance class with Fox Sinclair (called Foxercise) @Foxercise
5. Drinks at Bar Flores
6. Dinner at Bacari
7. The Taco truck on the corner of Santa Monica and Virgil
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My sister who inspires me endlessly, Leigha Mason.
