We had the good fortune of connecting with Mallory Marlowe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mallory, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
For me, it’s always felt like a complete given. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been telling stories and wanted to put them into the world. I always took my school writing assignments way too seriously and was jotting notes in the margins of all my notebooks during class. I started writing books (bad ones, granted!) when I was fourteen, and had always dreamed of seeing my name on the shelf.

As I headed to college, I knew I wanted to pursue writing, but I was kind of open to the avenue that would take. I studied screenwriting in college, which combined my love of writing with a love for the entertainment industry. Post-college, I worked at a talent agency for several years and now work in the video games industry for my day job. I remained writing for myself for a while, but a year or so into the pandemic, I felt it was time to try and pursue publishing, something that had been a lifelong dream of mine.

I think no matter what happens or what directions my career takes, I will always be creating in some form. It’s like a lifeline.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My love for telling stories expands across several formats and genres from books, to movies and tv, to video games. I released my debut novel LOVE AND OTHER CONSPIRACIES in August 2024, which went on to become a USA Today Bestseller. It’s a quirky romance about a skeptical video producer who pairs up with a paranormal conspiracy theorist to make a web series, and in the process of hunting for Bigfoot, aliens, and Mothman, find love instead. I have another book LOVE AT FIRST SIGHTING coming this upcoming August.

I love writing books that are a little weird, but have a lot of heart. I love reading and writing about oddballs finding love, as well as featuring neurodiverse characters getting their happily ever afters. My books are full of millennial humor, witty voice, and hopefully some swooning. My books usually have some kind of paranormal or speculative slant to them, but I would love to branch out and writer other genres as well.

Putting yourself out there and pursuing professional publishing is most certainly not easy. I spent years honing my craft before I even gained the confidence to try and get an agent or seek a publishing deal. My love for telling stories pushed me forward and the dream of seeing my name on bookshelves kept me going, as well as a wonderful support system from my friends and family.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Ripped Bodice – The Ripped Bodice is a romance-centric bookstore located in Culver City. It’s not only an absolutely adorable store, but they working to make the romance community a more inclusive and open place for all. They often host author events, panels, and community book clubs, too.

La Rochelle Bakery and Cafe – I’m always on the hunt for a great place to take my laptop and get some words down. This bakery in North Hollywood has the best pastries, coffee, and sandwiches, and a huge outdoor patio. I frequently spend whole days on the weekend there with my laptop doing work. It’s a lifesaver on deadlines!

Re: Coffee – Whenever I want a coffee that feels like a real treat, I hit up Re: Coffee. Their space is small and almost always popping (for good reason!). Their cream top coffees are to die for. I particularly like the seasonal pistachio cream top! They have locations in both Woodland Hills and Northridge.

Laurel Tavern – This is one of my favorite casual dinner spots in the Valley. During the pandemic, they turned their valet lot into an adorable outdoor picnic area, complete with a pop up airstream bar on the weekends. The food and drinks are fantastic, and a great place to gather and hang out with friends!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family and friends deserve all the recognition in the world. They’ve always had my back and supported me, even when I was young and all these hopes were just pipe dreams. I think they all knew I could do it before I ever could.

They also keep me sane. Publishing is not an easy business by any means. Even when there are big wins, there are still crushing losses and disappointments. Having a support system makes it all so much easier.
