We had the good fortune of connecting with Mama Shye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mama Shye, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
“POSITIVE VIBES ONLY” I know this may come as a shock from those that know me, but something I have definitely learned and have grown a great deal by taking into consideration is that in order to grow, we have to be able to navigate through the negativity as easily as the positivity. Whenever I’d find myself discouraged, sad, depressed, etc. I’d always find myself right back in that space one way or another when I’d try to “hurry up and be happy,” or “be strong, don’t cry.” I’d never take the time to FEEL. To go THROUGH the emotion rather than around it, so every time it resurfaced I would never be able to fully heal and push forward. This would affect my business in procrastination, this would affect my home life in not allowing the ones who love me most to love ME. My partner Julian is the most amazing human being I’ve ever met on this planet, and he’s the one who brought this concept to my attention. Ever since I’ve been training myself to make this way of thinking a new habit, everything around me has changed for the greater good.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am owner of Mama Shye’s Hair Company, which is an all natural hair company located in Los Angeles. Each product is created with love, and the intention to bring families closer together on their hair journeys. I’m most proud of bringing my first hair show to life August 2019. The vision came, and with hard work and consistency the show was everything I could ever imagine (and I was able to do it 8 months pregnant… never again!! Lol). What I love about Mama Shye’s Hair Care is the creativity and mixing of music, family, and hair all in one. Most of my Brand Ambassadors are either local makeup artists, models, singers, rappers, or musicians. All of the background music from my YouTube is from another upcoming musician. My YouTube videos aren’t super edited, they give you the REAL of what it’s like to run a business with a 1 & 2 year old. I got to where I am today professionally by believing in myself. I didn’t go to school for music or hair. I read a lot, and stayed consistent. I went from performing on stage for 3 of the homies to playing in the Grammy’s. I went from the dream of being a hairstylist in someone’s hair show to throwing my own hair show, and launching my own hair care line, all while being able to maintain my biggest dream: being a mommy and wife. It wasn’t easy, and I believe my biggest challenge has been my own mental restrictions I’ve put on myself in the past. Once I lifted those, ignored the outside noise and trusted my vision, everything just flowed. Not to say it’s perfect and there’s no hiccups, but I’ve definitely learned to rock with them. I want the world to know that Mama Shye is here. I live every single day to create new memories, inspire others, and most importantly be the Queen of my home and make my family proud. I feel that anyone who has ever been around or near Mama Shye’s Hair Care feels the love & joy that surrounds it. And that’s all I could ever ask for.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Julian Walker. My partner, my lover, my best friend, my girl’s father, my Poodah!!! This man has stuck my by side for the past 10 years, through the ups and downs, at my best and at my worst. He supports every dream I have. He’s front row and center (or even on stage lol) at all my events. He encourages me in his own way, he pushes me, and most of all he sees ME even when I’ve lost sight of mySELF. He’s just one of a kind and I thank God every day for him.
