We had the good fortune of connecting with Manny Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Manny, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
know yourself and you will win all battles” ― Sun Tzu – There will be many naysayers and people who might not get your vision, but you must remember to stay constant and trust in the dreams and passions that make you feel alive. To me this quote carries so much power and fuels me to a deeper discovery of self- my strengths, my weaknesses, my fears, my passions, the good, the bad – all of me. Throughout your creative endeavors, there will be many voices screaming and veering for your attention, and if you don’t have a solid foundation of self, you will NOT thrive! Knowing – REALLY knowing – who you are will really set you on the path to success!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the founder/director of LIBERTAD COLLECTIVE. A clothing brand that offers a fresh, innovative, contemporary, and socially conscious style. It is a brand that reflects a fashion-forward streetwear aesthetic, specializing in apparel that tells a story and carries a message of advocacy. Our silhouettes are ultra-relaxed and leave the styling up to the wearer’s own interpretation…The name LIBERTAD, which means freedom, serves to summarize the heart of our brand. We believe that every individual deserves liberty and freedom and use our clothing as both a fashion statement and a tool for social advocacy. My road in the fashion business has not always been easy, it’s been filled with many highs and lows. The journey has involved hitting the pavement, knocking on doors, being rejected, and on rare occasions praised for my efforts. I’ve repeatedly had to go back to the drawing board, I’ve researched and asked questions to see that my business succeeds. I’ve had to arduously work to fund the dreams and bring my vision to life. This being said at the culmination of each collection, there is a great feeling of satisfaction knowing that I am able to see my vision come to life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Let me start off by saying that I love Los Angeles. Every day there is something new to discover in this magical city, but if I had to choose and if COVID wasn’t a factor, I would definitely take you around my neighborhood: Silver Lake/ Los Feliz. We can start off the Saturday morning by going to MARU Coffee and grabbing an oat late, then make our way to brunch at a local favorite: Millie’s. From there we can visit some local shops: Le Labo, Gilly Flowers and Mohawk General Store. We can then relax at the Silver Lake Res and close things off with dinner and drinks at Cafe Stella. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would definitely love to highlight Raul and Josefina Garcia my parents. Because of them I am the designer and man I am today. They have influenced my outlook in life and have embedded a deep desire of advocacy, story- telling, heritage, legacy and tradition. They have also left me with a rich love for my Mexican-American culture which play a HUGE part in my design.
