We had the good fortune of connecting with Manny Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Manny, how does your business help the community?
When starting House Hats, the community / social impact was at the top of my priorities. We focus on growing and blending the house music genre while also spreading positivity and creating outlets / opportunities for all artist and creatives involved in the scene. We have really helped many up and coming artists and have showed many new members of the house scene what its like to be apart of a community. We know the importance of being able to get away from your daily life and enjoy a night of dancing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been djing since the 11th grade and have always loved dance music. In college, I met Jensen Diaz who eventually help start House hats with me. We had instant chemistry in the studio. We later on started “Cut & Sew”, our duo alias and have been working on creating funky tunes for our friends and for our dj sets where we sew beats together like fine fabrics. Our motto is “Cut the shit sew the love”. However, because of how well we work together we have also put so much love and dedication into growing our community and providing unique experiences bringing so many artist together and hosting events all over the globe. Diving into the music industry was not easy, we both had to pick up jobs in the sales industry to make ends meet. However staying focused and over communicating helped us build a successful team. It’s almost been 3 years of starting House Hats and I know I have a lot to learn and build, but I do want people to know the importance of doing what you love because if you do it — it won’t feel like work. Our record label, events, and merch have grown so quickly because of our team and it wouldn’t be possible if we did not work as a unit.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m usually on the road myself. When in LA I love taking my friends to hit the beach, enjoy some tacos and soak some rays. For my house music needs I like to go to Blind tiger. The Blind Tiger is one of the best spots to enjoy some house music next to Sound night club events or any Insomniac event (Day trip, Academy LA, Exchange LA). On my Sundays I love going to Melrose market and walking around seeing some art and thrifting. Grand Central Market is also a great place to grab some food and vibe.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The growth of House Hats and my personal self is credited to the team I work with. Jensen Diaz, Jason Tidman, and Stephen Scherer are all co-owners of House Hats because of the hard work they have put into getting House Hats to where it is now. It has been such a learning curve starting a business from the ground up and this team has been there from the start. Always listening and learning from each other. I could not thank them enough for trusting the process and giving me the motivation to continue doing what we do. I also would like to credit the rest of our team and community for pushing us in the right direction and keeping us on top and showing endless support. I would also like give Jason Tidman a shout out for recommending 3 really great books that keep us all grounded. Stillness is they Key, Ego is the enemy, and Obstacle is the way, all by Ryan Holiday. Jensen Diaz also gave me the book “What it takes” by Stephen A Schwarzman in 2019 and it really kept me focused in wanting to continue building a startup even though the future was not as clear as one would expect.
