We had the good fortune of connecting with Manuel Umo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Manuel, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
The first habit is following up on curiosity and learning all you can about every task that’s in front of you. I truly believe that if you have aggressively done your research and are well prepared, an opportunity will come.
The second habit is making lists. I had to develop this habit since from my early years I had dyslexia and had trouble connecting the dots in school. I developed a technique where everything I do involves following a step-by-step process.
The third habit is pursuing things with full focus and total determination. In fact, I’ve made it a rule: Never quit.
Thanks to a personal technique of using these three simple habits, I was able to come to America, learn multiple languages and accomplished a number of goals — for example working as a producer for a Hollywood post production studio in Hollywood.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a producer at MTI Film, I work for a company that offers multiple services for the entertainment industry in Hollywood, handling post production operations for Motion Pictures and TV industries. We provide color and final touches for top episodic TV Series, film restoration for classic movies, develop software for film restoration and post production mastering, and support remote Avid editing.
I feel lucky that the company has created a specific position for me, international markets, where I communicate with different agents about our software and techniques that we apply in our industry. It’s a huge platform that gives me the opportunity to expand our business into different areas of the world.
We just closed a deal with the TV and Film Archive of UCLA where they’ll be using our software application, DRS™ Nova, in the restoration of dozens of classic films — a part of history that the film industry and the city of Los Angeles are proud of.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Sunset Boulevard: I drive on it on my way to work and I never get tired. listening to the radio, watching all the people and the signs… It’s just mesmerizing.
My favorite restaurant, Figaro Bistrot on Vermont ave: there’s a sense of being in Europe with the people chatting, the terrace, the French cuisine, and the antiques collection.
The New Beverly Theater, where you can see classic films and be part of a like-minded community.
The Dirty Laundry Bar: the best dj’s, a sense of the underground, and good music. It is small but intimate.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have three shoutouts, since there is 3 people who have played key roles in my life and career:
My mother, who worked through numerous challenges to raise me in several European countries so that I would have the best possible education;
My wife, who has been in my corner since the early days when I arrived to Los Angeles, witnessing all the steps that led to where I am today — from becoming a US citizen to my first jobs and starting my first companies;
And my CEO at MTI Film, Larry Chernoff, and Executive Producer, Barbara Marshall, who have provided me with opportunity to grow and learn the business of film and TV in Hollywood.
