We had the good fortune of connecting with Manuela Oliveira and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Manuela, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Growing up in a Portuguese Family I’ve always been a mover and Groover and growing up Watching Breakin the movie and MTV I began to become inspired and by artist such as Janet Jackson, JLo, Chris Brown and Usher I wanted to be around it and dance for A-list artists, that inspired me to want to pursue a career in the dance industry and move to the US. So I decided to come to the US get trained by the best and surround in it! I’ve not looked back since.
Artists Create the future, we are the ones who envision the future we put it there with our vision and to be able to exercise that ability makes me more cause in creating a brighter future. I love the arts and to be able to live creating each day, not one day like the other I love it!! Dance allows me to communicate in ways words don’t and there is great joy in seeing my vision come to life as a choreographer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Professional Dancer and Choreographer for over 18years!!! I’ve learnt to give it my best and what’s for me will be exactly there for me!! Also that nothing is yours until it’s done and out. Jobs can change last minute and that can bring huge disappointment if you are not expecting things to change, be open be flexible be professional adapting to situations when they change.
Keep integrity in, meaning do what’s true for you and what feels right without confusing that with being out of the comfort as that sometimes feels wrong but in a different way, reach to be out of the comfort and when an opportunity presents itself take it there is always something to gain or learn from it!!!
I put my heart and soul into what I do! When I work with artists as a movement coach or choreographer it’s to bring the best of them out showcasing their natural abilities and adding to that.
I’m about bringing lots of energy to a project and that’s what I stand out for in all my dance projects!
It’s not been easy it requires discipline to show up the days you don’t feel like it and to keep going when is seems nothing is happening!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them hiking something I love to do especially in LA! Take them for a drive to Malibu and some fine dining or live music!! I honestly spend my days working training and dancing and prob not your best tourist guide ha… I’m yet to discover more of Los Angeles myself ha…
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to all those along the way who have supported me and encouraged me in some way to reach towards my goals, you know who you are and because of you I’ve continued and I’ve pushed harder!! Also to studios like Millennium Dance Complex, Debby Reynolds, The Edge and Broadway Dance Center NYC for having such studios to learn from the top in the industry and be surrounded by them, its allowed me to follow a professional career in dance!!
LA has given me my greatest career highlights working with top Artists and Tv shows beyond what I asked for so now I’m even more determined to lead the next generation and continue dancing, choreographing and teaching and attaining big projects!!!
