We had the good fortune of connecting with Marc Sanchez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marc, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Honestly, I am a big advocate of waking up before 5am and working out. This habit allows me to expel excess energy and manage my ADHD. It also allows me to redirect my mental stimulation towards my animation projects, storyboards and writing. Even when I was coaching high school football, I was waking up before 4am to weight train with my student athletes. This internal focus and practice not only keeps me healthy but my mental state in good shape. No one wants to work out after a long day of work. I’d rather hangout with friends, build Legos or paint.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well my art is honestly inspired by so many things. It’s a culmination of everything I’ve been exposed to. Whether it be anime, renaissance art, graffiti, American animation and my Mexican heritage. It took me a long time to find my style and I couldn’t be happier with my artwork.

Well I am still grinding. I am currently finishing up my Masters in Animation at the UCLA Animation Workshop. I will say this though being an artist is not for the faint of heart. It takes a lot of heart and perseverance. It’s similar to a sport. You have to be constantly practicing and honing your skills to be the top talent. Now I am not saying I am top talent, but I will always try to out work myself to improve my craft.

If anything I want people, especially young kids from broken families to know that the world needs more dreamers and the world needs doers; but above all, the world needs dreamers that do. It’s the simple truth about anything to give it plus ultra and trust that the doors will open for you if only you do the possible and let whatever you believe in do the impossible.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Man, I am still trying to learn everything LA has to offer still. Well, first off I’d take them on a tour of the UCLA campus. It’s such a beautiful campus and just has so much rich history. I’d specifically take them to room 451 in the library, just so they bask in the glory of where Ray Bradbury (one of my favorite authors) wrote so many of his stories. Then I’d of course take them to the Santa Monica Pier to enjoy the ocean breeze and make fun of all the clout chasers. I would take them to all the amazing food places here in LA. Breakfast Under Grind, lunch all the Taco vendors down Pico Blvd. and then for dinner Korean BBQ so we can destroy all the meats and down all the soju.

Night life I’d take them to Santa Monica for Moms bar and Gas lite, West Hollywood would take them to Tramp Stamp Granny’s and then Angel City Brewery. I honestly wish I knew more places, but school has kept me hyper focused on reaching my goal. All I know is that when I do obtain my dream I will be taking my friends everywhere to enjoy this wonderful and crazy city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give most of my thanks to my faith, because without it I would have never been blessed with all the friends, mentors and family members who have walked into my life. Whether it be my crazy rag tag group of high school and college buddies, to the professors who pushed me to succeed and even the students who I taught as a high school teacher and at UCLA. It’s because of them that I have been so successful in walking through and fighting all the pains and struggles I have faced reaching this point. Specifically my mom who has been my number one fan and non stop supporter for my dreams. She instilled in me the strength physically, emotionally and mentally to BearDown (Go Wildcats) and fight for your dreams.
