We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcellis Counts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcellis, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I often imagine how much my ancestors went through for me to be here today. I see my life as an extension of the will so many great people have left behind, an opportunity to affect change in my generation. My legacy will be one of becoming, sacrifice, love and fear.

When I think of what I want folks to remember about me- I think about what matters most. What matters most to me is awareness. I believe my awareness is what has allowed me to learn, connect, and navigate life in a way that makes me grateful to be alive despite the inherent challenges and pitfalls that coming along with the human experience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an urban farmer/beekeeper, artist, entrepreneur, friend, mentor, brother, son and more.

For years, as a child I wondered what my life would amount to. I felt like I had a strong idea of the life I wanted, but more than that- I knew what kind of life I did not want.

One thing that always made me feel good about myself is helping others, so I have based a lot of my life around that theme. After years of volunteering and working random jobs, I felt that my skills and input were often overlooked under-appreciated. So, once I graduated college I decided that I was not going to climb any corporate ladder or be a puppet for a nonprofit. I decided to believe in myself for once, and to do what I thought was right to make a difference in my life and the lives of others.

I analyzed the issues and devised a long-term solution that would hopefully repair my broken neighborhood and feed my family in the process. I’m not sure what inspired me to embark on this journey, but I chose to follow my intuition and it lead me to the bees. From bees to farming, environmentalism, and sustainability- I felt like I found the solution to all the world’s problems!

I have turned challenges into opportunities. Obstacles into playgrounds and naysayers into firm believers. It has been the most difficult process I have ever endured for a myriad of reasons, yet the love I have for my family, my community and for God has made my acts of service a reward in themselves. I am so grateful to have found my purpose, to share value with the world, and to help others discover how they can find freedom.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wow, (chuckles) well since you asked I love being productive and sharing meaningful experiences. So it would be a week long of working and playing hard. All my friends know I have no problem putting them to work so we’d volunteer at a garden, food pantry, or youth program for sure.

I’m really into thrifting for sustainability purposes but also to curb my appetite for consumption. So, we’d certainly have to hit a few of those, which then I of course bribe them with an all expense paid trip to the salvation army! Who doesn’t love that…

Museums, parks, hiking, fancy restaurants and exciting arts and culture events accompanied by plenty time indoors as I do equally enjoy plenty of time away from the public, where I can appreciate the people I’m around.

I used to party, go to concerts, and go to the mall but I don’t really do those things anymore.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom and sister have been consistent forces in my life throughout my successes and losses. They have always treated me like I mattered and that my life has true meaning to them. I appreciate their influence, and how it has helped me form into a strong man that they can be proud of.
